Hey folks,
I'm heading to Sherburne Sunday to find some woodcock for my pup's first hunt. I've never been out there before. So, I was hoping one of you guys could point me in the right direction of where I can (hopefully) find a few birds, but mostly be out of the way of other hunters.

I'll be coming in via I-10 from BR. If you guys could give me a general area based on this map, I would really appreciate it.

In the 1-16 area, or closer to the levee? Also, thank you.

Find something wet and thick. I don't hunt there anymore so I can't help you out on specific spots. The areas that people will clue you in on will be community holes that get lots of pressure so don't be surprised if you go where somebody recommends and don't kill much.

Woodcock like old ag fields during short periods of their progression. Many times I have busted briars that looked like birds should be there with poor results. Look for their droppings (splash) on the ground for signs that they have been in an area.

Out of curiosity what kind of dog are you running? Most of the places I hunt are dry as the sahara so even if you struggle early, don't give up home for the season. The rain is coming....

14 mo German Shorthaired. I didn't figure anybody would give me their secret spots, but a general idea in the 44k acre park. The guy I'm going with hunts duck up there, so he doesn't really know the other areas too well

On the south side of big Alabama and the shooting range/ camp ground is a road. Take thAt past the private camps. The woodcock fields are past the private camps, there are birds there, but not a lot due I the pressure...

Oh man, Wick. Thank you, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Have you seen any doves out there? My buddy was hoping to kill two birds with one stone, pun very much intended.

this rain moving in may bring them into those fields...I saw quite a few during the early dove opener...no dove but saw some woodcocks...

I saw about 10,000 robins come in this morning around Clinton,LA. If the woodcock came in today, I may have stumbled upon a significant correlation. Easier to look for robins than woodcock.

After posting, I googled "woodcock migration and robins." Seems I was on to something LINK

My old man tells a story of me and a friend on Christmas break, a pasture along a major highway, a policeman, a crazy lady, a couple Benjamin pellet rifles, and a backpack full of birds. That was a long time ago. I can still feel the burn of that belt on my arse.

my paw paw always made the last thing we shot before leaving the woods squirrel and rabbit hunting was to line up a wad of robins and get em for the gumbo...this was back in the late 50's...
