re: Let's go over the Harbaugh/Michigan timeline/questions...

This thread - like all Michigan threads on this board - is an odd mix of three types of people:
1) Michigan fans who want Harbaugh very much and, while they hope they don't have to, will settle for Miles if he's the guy
2) LSU fans who are working hard to try to convince someone (themselves, perhaps) that Michigan isn't getting Harbaugh and that Les is the guy (it appears this groups actually wants Les to leave LSU)
3) LSU fans who are working hard to try to convince someone (themselves, perhaps) that there is no way Miles is the guy for the Michigan job b/c Les doesn't want it.
It is fascinating to watch those three types of people battle back and forth. All hoping for different things. All convinced they'll get what they are hoping for. None knowing anything for sure.

I love it when people who don't know what they are talking about try and tell me things.

Does a team have the authority to do that? And? Whats the value if coach can say no?

This is way, way off.
I don't think LSU fans are working hard to convince people that Michigan isn't getting Harbaugh. I think just about everyone out there in the world is already convinced of this.

Do any reasonable Michigan fans really think he will go back to college?
The dude has been living\coaching in California for over a decade.
His last 4 jobs were at..
Oakland
San Diego
Stanford
San Francisco
The guy has been in the NFL for only 4 years. In that short time, he has brought the 49ers from bottom dwellers in the NFC to going to the NFC Championship game 3 straight times in his 1st 3 seasons (only NFL coach to ever do that) and to 1 superbowl.
He is a definite top 5 HC in the NFL right now, probably #2 behind Belichick to be honest.
The dude obviously loves living in Cali, due to all of his coaching jobs being there besides his 1st stint at WKU and living there for over a decade.
He is at the pinnacle of his profession coaching in the NFL making a shite ton of money, and due to get a huge raise at his next gig.
Knowing all of this, you guys still think he is going to go back to Michigan because he was a QB there almost 3 decades ago?

It would have to be a calling for Harbaugh to do such a thing, and if there's any Michigan alum out there to hear a calling and actually listen to it, it would be Miles, not Harbaugh.
Moneyg mentioned Harbaugh's ego, and while I agree it is huge, I disagree that it would lead him to Michigan, but actually keep him from there.
I'm following this only because of the very slight chance Miles answers this calling. I don't think he would give up the guaranteed money, or take a chance of losing a good coaching record. But, Miles is the kind of guy that could throw caution to the wind and buck conventional wisdom.
At LSU, he is guaranteed mediocre to high success on talent alone. At Michigan, he would have to prove himself at 61. Just can't see him putting his coaching reputation on the line in addition to giving up the guaranteed monies.
IMO, timing is right for Miles and LSU to move on and keep mutual respect, but just don't see it happening. It has crash and burn written all over it. Lol

UF just shelled out 3.5 million for McElwain and UM is going to toss out 8 million for Harbaugh? No chance.
Harbaugh can either stay in the NFL and make more money, or go and try and revive a dumpster fire of a program. Seems like a pretty easy decision.

I think a lot of people are forgetting just how bad Michigan is right now. At LSU you can be extremely mediocre and still pull in top 10 recruiting classes every year.

Michigan pulls in top 10 recruiting classes on the reg as well and Les Miles is as good a recruiter as they come.
I don't Les Miles or Harbaugh end up at Michigan but if Les Miles did, recruiting would not be a problem for him. I think he would probably have a meh 1st season and then go up from there. With good talent and average coaching you should be able to get 10 wins in the big 10

Some solid assumptions in there. Nothing that could be refuted.
But maybe he realized he prefers college to pros. Maybe he realized he's a better college coach than pro. That breed certainly exists. Maybe he realized that only having 3-5 years with a player works better than his coaching style.
Maybe none of that is true. I just really don't think he would string Michigan along for leverage. If he hasn't said no, he's considering it.

Just went through Rivals team rankings since '05...Michigan was in the top ten 50% of the time (less if you include this year). And they only had one top 5 finish. LSU dominates Michigan in terms of recruiting.
They've had this and still haven't managed 10 wins in how many years? I think '06 was the last year

He needs to let up off the gas a little and take a break while he's ahead. I sense the ban hammer coming.

Never said Michigan was better, just said they were good. and having 50% of your classes being top 10 is pretty damn good. Adding Les Miles to the equation would increase their recruiting even more.

They haven't really had average coaching
Brady Hoke was shite and Rich Rod was never really able to install his systems completely before getting the boot and his style didn't really mesh well with big 10 football. Les Miles style = big 10 style.
Michigan with Les Miles = a more talented version of Wisconsin

He made it to the Super Bowl as a NFL HC. Never did that in college (making it to a national championship that is).. Kind of proves he is a better NFL HC than College.
And he has only spent 3-5 years with his current team in the NFL, so how would he come to the realization that he works better when he only deals with kids for 3-5 years, when in fact, he has only been with his players in the NFL for 3-5 years?
