Oil Rig Work Questions
Posted on 12/10/14 at 1:46 pm

The $60 oil thread on the poliboard prompted this question.
Background: I fish in South LA a fair amount and run across the hard working men that work in the gulf quite often. Many drive really nice vehicles, have really nice boats, etc. In other words, they are making some money.
I always hear about "rig trash" money.
What kind of pay do these guys make by position on a rig (say deep water rig)? What jobs do they work...deck hand, tool pusher, etc., and what pay equates to those jobs?
Something I have always been curious about but never asked.
Thanks!

Entry level are probably making ~50k and at the top for drillers they can make 200k+
Even with the lower level guys the thing is half the year they aren't spending any money because they are working. So they blow it hard when they are off.

i'd rather live in a doublewide on 5 acres than a 2500SF house in a cul-de-sac
I just can't get my wife on board with my way of thinking

Good question. I can provide you with one answer.
Lead measurement/logging while drilling hands for the company I worked for made 3k/month plus about 425 per day when working.

I remember a thread on here within the last year talking about Jody and equating "him" to a driller.
Went something like:
Rate of Penetration: 100%
Depth of Penetration: Balls Deep.
I laughed out loud...

A lot of them make OK money, but spend like they're making $250k.
They live in shitty neighborhoods (by ot standards) and would be fricked if they got laid off.
This goes for most blue collar workers who make decent money.

This goes for most anyone. I know plenty of white collar workers in the same situation.

I was driving through Houma this weekend on the way back from the camp. They have all those draw bridges going over the canals... one of them is named Jody Bridge. I thought that was rather harsh considering there are probably a lot of offshore guys in that area.

There was a really hot girl that sold Directional drilling stuff and we used to come up with innuendos. Our best line, "Hey girl is the kickoff point? Cause i feel like we are about to go horizontal."
