My coworker just said that if he saw a drone flying over his backyard, well he would shoot it down

yeah, I wouldn't care for that either, but it's not just the privacy issue it's the proximity to people and property, the sobriety of the operator, etc., if licensed, human flown aircraft have these rules in place with strict penalties for non-compliance, how is it safe for just any yahoo to go down to Radio Shack, buy a drone and go barnstorming, buzzing, and endangering people in violation of the same rules?

Define drone.

I was referring to the kind that was in the LSU tailgate video.

I have also seen people use them in the marsh as well

I don't know the laws, but there was a guy filming the finish line of a 5K my little girl ran in Lafayette Saturday. It was pretty cool to watch.

So should RC helicopters and planes have the same laws?

That's basically all a drone is but people pump out hyperbole about them because of the word "drone" attached to them.

Precisely. R/C planes and helicopters have been video capable for many years, but when the word "drone" gets used people freak out. R/C aircraft are perfectly legal, camera or not. Now, if you crash it in to someone expect a PR nightmare and a lawsuit. Consider joining the AMA (academy model aeronautics ) for more info, and liability insurance.

We use the term "drone" because it has the ability to be autonomous..Otherwise, we say quad...

In other words you want a vehicle that is GPS guided that can fly out-of-site via FPV or waypoint designation. You're in the $600 + range.
The true problem here with regards to privacy, the FAA et al, is that this technology is so easy to obtain and under IDEAL conditions is very reliable. Total noobs take this stuff out and cannot handle issues and have no concept of how dangerous they can be.

I would probably mainly fly it in the outdoors where no one is around

so the kid who flew the drone on LSU campus didn't violate any laws?
Yes, he did depending on the timing of that flight. The FAA has banned all flights around athletic events of this nature. Ban was issued on October 27th.

Drone usage for private sector usage is strictly prohibited by the FAA.
Incorrect. Drone use for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited. Personal use is not restricted yet other than the 5 mile zone around airports.

with regard to proximity limitations to people and property except for the purposes of take-off and landing, and some sort of demonstrated proficiency of the operator, I believe so, I'm not a big rules or over regulation guy, but you can't have Boudreaux and Thibodeaux getting shite faced at their tailgate flying drones that they picked up at the hobby shop on the way to the stadium all over the place at dangerously low altitudes

TGI Friday's Dumb Mistletoe Drone Cut Somebody's Face Open

quote:

Quiones had encouraged our reporter to let him land the smaller of the two aircraft on her hand, but she flinched when the 10-inch drone touched down — and he said that is what caused the four-bladed flying machine to careen into the face of our photographer nearby. But Benvenuto insisted that the responsibility lies with the man operating the controls.

It is prohibited by the FAA right now unless you have a permit. However, it is completely unenforceable and judges have ruled against the FAA every time they have tried to fine someone for commercial use.

FAA and NTSB
If you fall under civil or public use you are subject to approval by the FAA.

The whole commercial use thing is the FAA's attempt to bypass the "Congress shall not make a rule.." language exempting recreational aka RC craft. Gives them a new revenue stream if you have to seek a pilot's license and approval. Having said that, I cannot disagree that not everyone should have one of these.

Edit: Fixed NTSB acronymn.

Edit2: A downvote? Really?

Did this get anchored? Wonder if the LSU drone pilot is trying to make it go away.
