Why does the NFL refuse to place a camera facing directly down the goal line

Someone explain this to me, every replay has to be from different awkward angles that never make it easy to tell if a ball crosses the plane

Makes officiating more accountable. Fix is In.
Honestly I have no idea. It's pretty dumb.

One thing I league I give a lot of credit to is the NHL.
They were the pioneers of major league replay.
And they have consistent cameras in every arena.

Why isn't there sensors on tips of the ball so you can pin point the exact location of spot?

What happens if the middle of the ball crosses, but the tips don't?

Because the NFL is about entertainment, not being flawless

Magnetic foil stripe down the middle both directions forming a T. Under the leather of course.

What about the metallic necklaces that WRs wear? That would false positive a TD.

The fact that the NFL still uses two old men with a fricking chain to decide their first downs tells you all you need to know about the league.
That's such an inexact science for something so important. Short by an inch? Well, you know, maybe he actually made it but the chain guy was off.

Exactly. It isn't in their best interest to automate/remove the human element from the game. Seeing the dude stretch the chains on a close spot on fourth and short is suspense that can't be replaced.
If they cared about getting every call 100% correct there would be several big changes

The chain crew is part of the romanticism.
Some things are better left to romance.

Truly baffles me that haven't found a better way to do this

Basically, its a conspiracy against the Saints. I'm sure it has cost them 2 wins so far this year.

They know there are better ways. But the chain measurement is iconic.

You mean you don't enjoy watching an official run up from nine yards behind the play and arbitrarily decide if the spot should be six inches short or six inches past the first down marker?

The chain reminded me of that high school that had an 11 yard chain and no one noticed for like 2 years or something like that

Pilon cameras in pro and college would be a huge upgrade
