I play at Querbes once a week-- usually Friday afternoons. This past summer/fall it was in the best shape I have ever seen it. I didn't realize it was losing business because every time I went out there it was packed.
They are losing the morning business. That's when us old folks play. And it's not just cold weather. They didn't have early morning business in summer. The course today was in terrific shape. We were all impressed at the removal of leaves.
Barksdale AFB is the worst with this. You can hit your ball in the middle of the fairway and lose it under leaves at this time of year.

Doesn't matter because you're obviously not playing it down. If you're not marking your ball, you could stripe it down the middle and partners could assess a penalty because there's no way of proving it's your ball.

Playing it down is the one thing everybody should do, even if they suck.
If you bump it and shoot 81, it's not really a score. It's just 'hitting shots' on the course.

No one has explained the term 'playing it down'. What does that mean?
BTW, as long as I'm on a golf thread I've got a pet peeve.
We play a rotation of 8 courses. Mostly semi private and a couple strictly public. I have noticed that all of the courses have cart paths that have been in disrepair for decades. Some of the holes in the concrete could become homes for midgets.
Does anyone else notice this in your area? I'm assuming it's from declining revenue.

Play it down means play it as it lies.
No moving ball around out of a divot or so it sits up in the rough or improving your lie.

Misinformation galore in this thread.
You can pick a ball up to identify it without penalty, but only to identify.
If the two balls were indistinguishable, and both you and your playing partner(s) agreed that the first ball was yours before you hit, then it's no penalty and you continue playing that ball.
If there is doubt, then you just go back to the tee under ruling of lost ball and re-tee.
If the second ball was identified as being yours after you hit the first one, it's a one strike penalty. The first ball is void and you hit your third shot from where the second ball lies.
ETA: and that scenario isn't quirky by any stretch. Happens a lot.

Well, then all of the people who posted that have reading problems. There were TWO identical balls. I played them down. I didn't know which ball was mine. So, the 'play it down' advice is totally irrelevant to my post.

eh, horseshite. i have about 1000x more fun bumping the ball to a nice lie than i do "playing it down."
if you suck like me, you arent worried about a score, just having a good time.
and im not slowing down play or doing anything stupid. just following course etiquette and hitting like 90 shots in the way i find the most fun.

Sounds pretty Nitro.
Do you drink when you play as well?

I did not pick up the ball. I could see the identity as it lay and hit it.

They were identical balls. My partners and I had no clue since it was a dense fog. I voided the first and took my chances with the second before I shot it. My decision was based totally on feel of the club hitting the ball. It had to have gone farther than the first ball.
They were in agreement. If I had screwed up the second ball shot we would still have played it and picked up the first ball even if it was closer to the hole.

Long as we don't have a bet going, I don't care if you bump it. Whatever you want to do.
One guy in our group always wants to take club lengths and bump it when we play for money though. That don't fly.

If he's always improving his lie, why would he? ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)
