Ducks just circling

Any help appreciated.....
Hunting a new spot this year, private land I have permission to hunt. I've been duck hunting 4 years now but mostly went with others.
Well so far most of the ducks I'm seeing only circle but do not want to light. Not flaring either. I hunt a rice field out of a ground blind (not pit blind), I call pretty good and do not over call, not sure what I'm doing wrong.

you need a duck commander call, a ridiculous looking beard, face paint, a head band, and to hail call the frick out of them ducks.

I've noticed this a LOT in my years hunting our rice fields. Seems to happen more than the marsh in my experience. Get a better spot

Are you set up with the right wind? overcalling maybe?

Not overcalling at all, usually just give a couple quacks just to turn them back. Have a Mojo and wonderduck....set up with the wind is good.
They are not flaring either. This past Saturday a pair of Mallards circled three times and didn't flare just did not commit.....
A friend told me my spread could be set wrong. I use the X pattern.
A mixbag....Mallards, Redheads, Teal....had some Woodies buzz us but I know how they are....and some Mergansers too.

If you aren't in a pit in a levee you are going to struggle I would guess in a rice field. We used to use skid blinds around the edges of rice fields but the ducks always were pretty wary of them sticking up. You need to invest in some layout blinds to get low to the ground if you want to kill ducks in that field, or else change spots to somewhere with a pit.

Set up now in a tree line on the edge of the fields.(40 acres).....My thoughts were maybe they would rather light in the middle fields not near trees where predators could hide.

Don't use the 'X' pattern (never heard of this). Just put the decoys out in the most natural way possible, making sure to leave an obvious landing area where you want them to land. Trying to put decoys out in certain formations or shapes will end up looking too artificial to the birds IMO

I had a lot of luck with big ducks this past week using a jerk string. On several occasions, with a pull or two, they locked up and dropped after seeing that. Give that a try.

They love to light in the middle. We had a field that was tree lined exactly like you are talking about years ago in SE Arkansas. We tried skids around the edges as the pit was in a terrible spot in the corner of the field. The ducks would rarely get inside of 50-60 yards after the first few weeks of the season. I would suggest trying layouts/coffin blinds or else get a pit sunk out in the middle. Ducks have been skittish a lot this season - had one group of 15 mallards circle us probably 12 times last week and never once act like they were going to do it before they decided to turn and fall right in the decoys about 20 yards out on the last pass- strange.

Put a slow moving vehicle sign on the back of your blind. The Ducks will think it is a tractor and drop right in.
