How many of you have secondary teams in a given league?

And how actively do you root for them? Do you have any gear for these teams?

not everyone just picks teams to like out of hat like you

I don't have any secondary teams nor did I pick any team I do root for out of a hat.
I was having a discussion with someone who has two teams in every league and was wondering how common this is.

I've been watching the Dolphins this season. I don't really root for them, they're just a fun team to watch.

My favorite team is the San Francisco 49ers and my other favorite team is the Seattle Seahawks.
When they play each other I just keep cheering lol

I have always liked New England...although I was in no way enjoying the thrusting I received on Sunday.
Spurs in the NBA too...but, that stems from David Robinson being my favorite player growing up.

I have never, at any point in my life, understood this concept. Pick a fricking team and support them.

It's extremely common...for bandwagon fans.

When I was a kid, my secondary team in the NFL was the Greenbay Packers. I had a big green G sweatshirt and everything. I was a huge fan of Bret Favre. Once he left, I no longer felt the same way about the franchise.

You can be a diehard fan of a team and have a passing interest in another.

When I was a little kid, I loved watching Brett Favre and the Packers. I have an old Starter Jacket from 1996 I think.
I'll cheer for them unless their success is detrimental for the Saints.

"passing interest" isn't quite the same as having a full on "secondary team" that you're buying gear for and cheering for in every game.
Now, I will say there are some exceptions, kind of. For instance, let's say you're a diehard LSU fan (for example) and your wife went to somewhere like south carolina. Obviously you'll watch them and support them, but it's mainly because you kinda have to. That sprouted from family. That's not the same as being an LSU fan and then randomly saying "hmm, I think I kinda like carolina now too. I'll be a fan of them as well"

Correct. Fan, as in fanatic. As in, donate for season tickets, buy merchandise, go to all the games, read their message boards, etc.

Even if someone grew up in two NFL cities, still no?

I find myself pulling for teams, especially if my team is out of the playoffs (common for a Houston sports fan), but I'm not a committed fan to any other teams.

No "secondary" teams, but there are some I enjoy watching; Pats and Broncos are both enjoyable, plus they are AFC teams.
For NBA; Specific players
Lebron, Curry, Dirk, and a few others

I am a Pistons "fan" as you described...I would consider the Spurs to be a "secondary" team that I pull for. When they played in the Finals I was in no way, shape, or form torn about what I wanted to have happen, nor did it suck any less when they lost. It didn't temper my fandom at all. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I suppose the NFL is different since it's simply a corporation of different business with not 1/10th of the actual ties of college. I have an NFL team, but my whole life has been centered around college. In college no, I don't think there can be 2 main teams. I guess the NFL may be different, but it still seems like you'd pull for your current city. I mean what if your job relocates every 3 years? After a few decades you'll be a "fan" of damn near 2 full divisions.
