re: Why Didn't Any Store Owners Defend Their Property?

I would be worried about an escape route if I were the business owner in the event they firebombed the outside of the building, setting it ablaze. You would then have to fight your way out on the streets - which could get hairy.
On the insurance note, I wonder if any companies thought of hiring Blackwater types, like happened in NOLA during Katrina? I suppose too much risk involved and too many cameras around.
Blackwater prevented the absolute destruction of many million dollar homes on St. Charles.

i bet more just made sure their insurance paid out for vandalism, and intentional destruction.
That is what I would have done. Doubled checked my insurance policy, boarded up and went home and protected my family.

Do you think it wouldn't have worked. Or do you just not believe in defending ones property against the dregs and vultures of society?
It probably would,
That comment just appears to be more of the same I am reading on various message boards today. Everyone watching these events unfold in the safety of their own home would have the world believe they are fricking bad asses who have no problem firing upon other human beings, yeah they're criminals alright, but I don't believe every joker that says they are ready to go to war behind the keyboard would be a cool customer discharging a firearm at a group of people.

It is an odd situation. While we properly value life over property in this nation, when you have built a business and your family's livelihood depends on that income, it seems that you would defend it.
The first guy in the door of that liquor store getting smoked would have surely slowed their progress.
Having said that, I wonder if it would have slowed the aggression or drawn attention and resulted in an even worse outcome.
The looters were cowards. It's why they were where the cops weren't. Had the first one through the hole been shot, not only would no one else have tried going through, the entire parking lot would have cleared in about 5 seconds.

While I tend to agree, I think we both might be surprised though. When you see savages trying to destroy what has taken you a lifetime to build, you may be inclined to aim true and squeeze easy.

um, yeah it works
if you're looking for a place to loot, do you think you're likely to choose the place where the owner(s) are outside brandishing AKs with 30 rounds of some nasty shite in each magazine?
frick no

Because not every small business owner is Charles Bronson? Maybe these business owners aren't the badass Internet killers that seem to frequent td. Com. It's easy to talk from behind a keyboard, another thing entirely when you're are faced with an angry mob willing to resort to violence and you stand to lose more than your physical business.
While I fully support the idea in theory, these guys really have no idea what's coming through the door.

yeah because that's what this thread is about...
the general consensus is they wouldn't even frick with you
We have a family business, in this situation, my brother wouldn't even give me a choice, we'd be outside standing watch.

Hey, St. Aug,
Did you go to St. Augustine HS? If so, did you know a teacher named Leonard Augustine? He was a friend of mine.

If anyone ever wonders why nice businesses do not open in those areas here is a great example. It isn't racism. It is safety. Most people do not even want to do business during normal times there.

What are you even talking about? Multiple people have stated once they picked a guy off coming in the others would stop.
I'm saying there are many many people out there that don't have it in them to kill in order to protect their business. That's all. So go roll your eyes someplace else douche.
And no Zach. Name is in reference to St Augustine Florida

Thanks. Leonard is probably deceased.

Because if you're in there armed or not you'll be overwhelmed and burned out or killed. If you do kill, you'll be arrested and spend time in a holding cell with the looters.

And most people aren't prepared to kill either when they have the option not to.

well then that's admirable, but I hate to say it...that's natural selection at work
people really don't understand the kind of financial setbacks just looting a convenience store can have for that owner. These people may lose their business, their home, everything...when food or shelter becomes an issue or my life, I'd have no qualms...I mean that. My only hesitation ever would be going to jail...however, and I don't know this, I imagine that hesitation is removed when the shite hits the fan.
anyway, that's why I moved where I am, I feel safe. comparatively speaking of course.

that's why I wouldn't be in there...I feel confident in the fact that I'm empathizing correctly here
if I'm looting and I see a rifle, I'm going to the other place
again, looters are self preservationists too

That's why I came up with idea of using claymore mines. Looters dead, you're safe at home. It's a win-win.

And every word of that may be true in regards to your actions. However, the question posed was why didn't business owners in Ferguson stay. I'd bet anything in the world that many of them did not share your willingness to stand guard regardless of potential outcomes.
Also natural selection? Natural selection of business ownership? I'd be willing to bet that those not standing guard feel they could handle picking up the pieces of their business more than their family could losing a loved one. You may even argue that in a hypothetical shite hits the fan scenario those willing to cut their loses over those ready to jump into a potentially deadly situation are the true beneficiaries of "natural selection."
