What's your go-to virus protection product/service?

My home laptop, a Lenovo about 4 years old, is the victim of some pretty nasty malware this week. Right now, I use McAfee, but am pretty tired of them because the real-time scanning never seems to catch anything early and the customer support stinks. I spent 4 hours yesterday trying to get it fixed while talking to someone in India. And that wasn't the end of it, because for some reason my hard-drive became full (not possible from my doing) and they don't know why or how to fix it (yet, the guy claimed my computer was now virus free).
So, has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with Kaspersky, MyCleanPC or any other virus protection/operational system support service that I should consider?
Thanks in advance.

Are you running Windows 7?
On my 8.1 machines I run Windows defender, Windows firewall, malwarebytes, and ad blocking/script blocking add ons in my browser. This has worked well so far.
I'm not sure how effective Windows defender is on 7...

MalwareBytes is my goto to.
Even the free version is solid.
After years of using it for free and watching it develop from a shareware, yet still powerful, tool, I decided to buy a 1 year sub to the premium service this year.
I've never regretted having it and at times have regretted NOT having it.
I work in IT, so I constantly get the "Hey man, I've got a computer problem, can you fix it for me?" phone calls and texts from friends and family. Before I lay a finger on their machine, I tell them to download and run malwarebytes and more often than not, that alone can solve their problems.

I use Windows Defender, which isn't a resource hog. Plus I back up all my data every day. The online backup company I use backs up every version of every file, so if a data file gets compromised I can just get an older one.
I can do a clean reinstall of everything in just over an hour, that takes less time than trying to disinfect a machine.

OSX. ( and a dash of common sense)

Avast (free), typically for everyday virus monitoring. However, it has become extremely bloated as of late.
Hitmanpro by SurfRight.
Kaspersky (paid) is pretty good as well.
Malwarebytes and CCleaner for malware/adware.
And anything from bleepingcomputer (RKILL is great).

the common sense part of at equation is a lot more valuable than the OSX.
As for the OP, never pay for virus protection. Are they going to reimburse you for taking it to a local shop to clean up? No? Why pay for the service then.
Use the free version of AVG, Avast, or MSE and keep the free version of malwarebytes up to date. 2 other free products that are useful to remove virus and malware is ADWcleaner and RogueKiller. All of those programs can be downloaded for free at bleepingcomputer.com

Well, the number of active malware for OSX is minuscule compared to that for Windows. So you almost have to work at it to have a problem, like use pirated software ( and even that is unlikely ).

Microsoft Security Essentials+ Malwarebytes is what I normally use.

Eset for Anti-Virus
All these people saying MalwareBytes.
You realize the free version only cleans up AFTER you are already hit right ?

Yeah. I found that out a couple a years ago. Much to my surprise.

Which is why it is used in conjunction with an antivirus program, not in place of.

Every time I build a new computer, I wait for newegg to sell ESET for 10 bucks, (or buy a 3-user license for 20)
I've had it for over 3 years and I've never had an issue with any of my computers. One of which is always downloading something from the bay of pirates.

Use the free version of AVG
Has AVG improved? Because many years ago I recall it being a nagging, intrusive resource hog.
For prevention, Windows 8/8.1's native security is more than sufficient. And I am torrenting movies, music, games, and software constantly.
