The Verge: Sony's PlayStation Vue is a cloud-based TV service designed to kill your cable box
And finally, a year and a half later, we now know what the Sony-Viacom TV deal was for.

PlayStation Vue will launch with a package of "around 75 channels per market," said Sony. That includes local broadcast networks as well as cable channels from media companies such as Fox, NBCUniversal and Viacom. On-demand content will also be a part of the service, with the previous three days of "popular programming" available at all times, plus the ability for viewers to save episodes of their favorite shows to the cloud and retain access for up to 28 days. Here's a partial list of channels straight from Sony:
CBS - At launch, PlayStation Vue will offer the live linear signal from CBS Television Network's owned-and-operated TV stations in select leading markets in addition to on-demand prime-time programming.
Discovery Communications - Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, Discovery Family Channel and 11 more brands.
Fox - Fox Networks Group's portfolio of national entertainment programming services, including - FX, FXX, FXM, National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD. Additionally FOX Sports' national and regional programming services - FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2, BTN, Fox's regional sports networks, including YES Network and Prime Ticket. The agreement also covers Fox's owned and operated television stations.
NBCUniversal - All local offerings from NBC, Telemundo and regional sports networks as well as Bravo, CNBC, E!, NBCSN, Oxygen, Sprout, Syfy, USA Network and more.
Scripps Networks Interactive - HGTV, Food Network, Travel Channel, DIY Network and Cooking Channel.
Viacom - BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Palladia, Spike, VH1 and more.

Sony gave no details about pricing for PlayStation Vue, but said that it will offer subscriptions on a month-to-month basis at a "fair and competitive price" with no contracts, no hidden fees and no cancellation charges. PlayStation Vue will launch in an invite-only beta later this month on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, first in New York and then in Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Sony plans to bring the service to iPad "shortly thereafter," and at some point after that to additional devices from Sony and other companies. The full commercial launch of PlayStation Vue is currently scheduled for the first quarter of 2015.

But Sony's service appears smartly designed, aping cable TV but improving on it by letting people watch everything shown over the last three days at any time, without recording it beforehand. With experience in the sector and a profitable PlayStation division behind it, Sony might be able to give the new Vue the kind of kickstart it needs to get people cutting their cords.

The number of pay-TV defectors is steadily rising: About 6.5 percent of households nationwide have cut the cord, up slightly from 4.5 percent in 2010, according to research by Experian Marketing Services.

That's cool and all but people are already subscribed to countless streaming services that are on a lot of other devices. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc.
Sony is a little late to get in on this.
ETA: If it is truly a cable replacement then it may have a shot.
What's bad for them is that they no longer make TVs so outside of Playstation it will be hard for this to stick since they can't offer it on Smart TVs.
They will have to try to get in on Roku and other streaming devices.

Problem is a lot of those services don't get shows or movies right away. Prime stream is usually good about getting it asap if the show is in their library like Vikings and Black Sails same with Hulu. But if PS can some how be able to get the shows from their partner networks when it first comes on tv, they could be on to something. Big if though.
Alot of series still are old on prime, hulu etc. If sony some how gets brand new content on that night then this could be successful.

Sony owns and produces a lot of series so they will get those no problem.

If thats the case they are already ahead of the curve. It would be like watching live tv.

If they can deliver, awesome. All these streaming services are good in theory but it's all about who can deliver.

ISWYDT,T. And I was on that pain train when Xbox One came out about criticizing it. But the thing I couldn't wrap my head around was watching TV while you game. Anyways, for those that have been thinking about cutting the cable like me, it offers me another alternative to the cable box that I only use for sports, really.
That's the rub for me. Can I watch live sports?

It's really a waiting game for ESPN 3 to take off. It's not consistent enough to rely on yet.

I guess what I'm asking is can I watch the NFL live on Sunday if I cut the cord and only have this service?

If this thing works as designed there is a lot more offered than on any of those services. This service appears to have quite a few channels that were previously unavailable to cord cutters.
This is big for me because HGTV, E!, and MTV are on this service so if it is offered at a decent price I can now convince the wife to cut the cord.

Why can't they offer it on SmartTVs?

They can but it's going to cost them like crazy to get on say a Samsung TV.
I was saying they can't offer it on their TVs as a package deal.

Aren't Sony and Samsung the same thing?
Posted on 11/13/14 at 7:52 am to The Sad Banana
No
ETA: I also wonder what this will do with their partnerships with Netflix, etc as far as having the apps on PS

You can watch the nfl on fox and cbs with nothing but an antenna
Espn is the problem, if you don't have access to Watchespn....which technically no one should have without a cable or satellite subscription to those channels
