Decoy painting thread with pics

A couple weekends back, me, Polar Pop and a padnuh got together to work on duck prep. I already posted a thread with our kayak blind building. The other task we began that day was some decoy painting. The plan was to convert 6 mallards and 24 blue wing decoys into 6 redheads, 12 summer plumage bwt, and 12 poule d'eau.
First we cleaned all of the decoys with some simple green to remove loose paint, dirt and oil.
Here are the dekes prior to painting (well most of them anyway, we had already started the base coat on a couple):
Next, the decoys were all given a black base coat with Rustoleum spray-on bed liner ($11/can from Wal-Mart. We used 4 cans):
After that dried, we painted the decoys as follows:
Coots - left them black and used white oil paint for the bills. Still need to paint eyes red
BWT - Solid brown spray paint on body, left the bills black and used blue-gray oil paint on the wings. Still need some white markings on the wings.
Redheads - light-gray Rustoleum primer for body and redish-brown for the heads. Used same blue-gray oil paint for bills and paint markers for the eyes. Still need to add black to tip of the bills.
We used painter's tape to section off areas like the bill or head when using different colors.
After all the oil paint dries (almost a week now and still not dry - thank you cold temps...) we will coat with a satin Krylon polyurethane finish to protect the paint job.

Looks pretty good. Curious to know how well they hold up this year. I just ordered 4 dozen new ones because of chipped paint.

That had to take forever

I just touched up some pintails/spoonies. Did it last year and a lot of them the white breast color chipped/fell off. Those look great.

Only thing more fun than that is putting together goose decoys

Run em under hot water. They go right on

Bed liner came out good. I just used flat black Krylon paint and a few good coats of flat clear. Hope they stand up to the beating.

I've gone back and forth on flat vs satin and at the end of the day it probably won't matter, but I decided satin was a more realistic finish to the decoys. Ducks always have some sort of shimmer in the feathers.

Hit the base of the heads with really hot water to soften up the plastic, it's not bad.

The flat black isn't as flat as camo black. It has a hint of a shine to it when the light hits it.

Nice. Yeah the camo spray paint is ultra-flat. It has 0 shine whatsoever.
