Is DirecTV really bragging about "99% signal reliability" in their commercials?

I guess 99% sounds good to a lot of people? All I hear is "you will lose your signal for about 15 minutes a day".

As opposed to..? I'm not on any side here, but I have had antenna, dish, direct, U-verse and Cox...None of them have 100% reliability

More channels, cheaper, and more reliable than Cox. Ill take 99% all day.

I'm just saying there's a whole lot of improvement to be made between 99 and 100%, and 99% seems, to me, to be the bare minimum reliability to even be called acceptable service, and not something to brag about in a commercial.

Agreed..Unless your competition is at 98%

I've had Cox for over 10 years and the only time my cable has ever gone out is due to a named storm. Also, I have the 2nd highest internet tier, sports and movie pak and pay $121 a month.

I've always thought of it as "1 minute out of every 100 minutes is fricked," and then I wonder why anyone would put up with such terrible reliability that won't even get you through a football game or a commerical-packed episode of Sons of Anarchy (though if you're lucky the outage will be during the montage - could be a plus). There's no positive way to interpret such an asinine claim. I expect it's better than that, and they must be relying on their customers' innumeracy.

I like DirecTV. I have had 0 problems with reliability. In the last 2.5 years, I can count on one hand how many times I lost signal- one was during a snow storm, and another during an insane thunderstorm one night.
Other than that- no probs. Typical rainy/cloudy days and have had no issues.

While true, I have never had Cox go out because it was raining hard. Happened all the damn time on satellite.

If I remember right, they are JD Power's most reliable television provider
So 99% would be good

That's just based on consumer ratings, not actual reliability data.
When someone's DirecTV goes out due to weather, do you think most people factor that in to their perception of reliability, whether consciously or unconsciously? I mean, it's not DirecTV's fault you can't watch TV because the weather is bad, right? I imagine a lot of people give them a pass in those cases. But if someone's cable goes out, it's got to be the cable company's fault.

I had dish, and I only lost the signal once. Unfortunately it was during a nasty storm

I'm always hearing this. Which is it, or if both are true, what is the YMMV factor that is responsible?

My parents have DTV...it would go out about once per month on average when I was living there due to storms
Posted on 11/6/14 at 7:38 pm to TigerTatorTots
When DTV goes out it's never for more than 5 minutes IMO
When cable goes out, which is admittedly rarer, it's likely hours or days before it's fixed

all depends on location, when I had charter cable it went out every 2-3 weeks. Cable has any number of potential break points between the source and the destination, sat has but a few.
