Maybe so. They also didn't understand time as a resource, fully, either. They made a mistake going to Miller's at all. Human beings are imperfect. A film portraying that doesn't ruin the immersive experience for me.

Yeah, I have no problem with this movie being dumbed down for the masses. I wanted this movie to have mass appeal, but also have complex subject matter
He does seem to have to explain things a lot in the dialogue, but that's because no one would know what the frick was going on if it wasn't. You keep calling it dumbed down, but it had to be. You wouldn't have understood it either had it not been.
This thread is littered with you acting like you're the only person on this board who gets the movie. It's like you're trying to teach everyone about the movie instead of discussing it.

TARS had a son. He became a swinger. His name was TARS-AN

Maybe convenient, but it was a great ending.
Again, bullshite writing.
If she has days or weeks to live and given that she has been briefed on Brand's situation and how time moves on her planet.
Cooper had all the time in the world to spend with his daughter in her dying days.
FURTHER, Brand was taking the big nap. Since she believed she would be the caretaker of all the eggs (you know humanity's future) so she wasn't going anywhere.
A couple of weeks would have made ZERO difference.

She also made some sort of comment about "a parent should never have to bury their child". They could have made the interaction better, but there was at least some explanation on why she sent him away.
From the narrative's perspective: she was giving Cooper the send off blessing they both always wanted. The previous send off was rife with anger. That drove cooper to come back and drove murph to solve to equation out of regret.
They had their second chance and she didn't want to miss it. This was her blessing to him.
With all that said, the entitled snobby grand kids who ignored him in the room almost ruined it...as well as Jonathan Nolan's intended "commentary"

She wanted to see him, one last time (we all would possess that instinct, I think), but had no desire to have him sit and watch her die. She explicitly rejected that. She also pushed him towards Brand because Brand was alone - she had "her" family, as she also explicitly expressed.
Y'all are shooting holes in the writing, but it does not have to be this masterful, Lost-esque web of complexity that gets lost up its own arse. People were confused with Inception's story, which was more complex than Interstellar's but he didn't hide the ball, from a narrative standpoint except that ultimate question at the very end. And Memento gets slammed for being complex - and it isn't from a writing standpoint, but merely from the POV it is presented, precisely because that was the whole point.
The writing on this film was excellent. This screenplay will be nominated for major awards. This film will end up highly decorated, rightly so.

quick question, I'm sure it's been discusse dbut
Did I miss what the accident was that caused Coop to no longer be a pilot? They showed a glimpse at the beginning during his dream but did they ever address that again?

She traveled for two years to see him.
She sends him off after seeing him for 5 minutes.
That's poor writing.
Again, Brand was alone, we all get that. But spending a few days with his daughter does not change Brand's situation whatsoever. Brand was going no where and given how slow time was moving for Brand, we were left with the impression she had "just arrived" so she didn't even have time to go crazy like damon did.
I won't touch Murph's family. They were straight out assholes.

He was flying a ship for NASA that he or some other super duper human from the future intentionally crashed so that he would quit NASA and become a farmer so that he could later be chosen by his future self to re-discover NASA so he could be rehired by NASA to pilot ships again.

I'm not saying I'm an expert on this subject matter or anything, but I do have an understanding of it and am obsessed with these principles, so I think I would have understood it. Maybe the only thing that needed to be explained to me that future humanity was doing this, but that's about it.

A gravity anomaly coming from the wormhole and Gargantua.

Ignore his comments.
I have enjoyed your remarks. It helped me understand the movie better (that and my genius son explaining the science to me).

In cryo-freeze - and I think it served as double duty to have the family reunion and go ahead and check out. I mean - she kind of knew that his return has something of a shelf-life, didn't she? As smart as she was? Maybe she was implicitly waiting for this moment and realized his place was on Edmund's world with Brand, rather than watching her die?
quote:
She sends him off after seeing him for 5 minutes.
The movie was already 3 hours long - a couple more scenes of him talking to her in the hospital bed wouldn't have made you like the movie - either you liked it or you didn't at that point.

They had no idea about who Cooper was - nothing in common, no common experiences other than biology.
I didn't care for them much either, but they passed pretty quickly. They're almost irrelevant to the story.

The fact that his kid, who loved her dad finally gets to see him on her death bed and she just sends him away? (After spending two years traveling to see him) Come on...or the fact that he was the guy who literally saved humanity and everyone in that room treated him like a part of the furniture.
This is one of my favorite parts of the movie. It's not lazy writing at all. You think this was done unintentionally?
Murph is essentially telling Cooper to go start life over. There's nothing but the past and pain here for you, and you already sacrificed enough.
She gave him the opportunity to walk away. She knew and understood her dad perfectly. It was essentially the ultimate gesture of forgiveness.

Did she travel 2 years? I thought it was merely like 2 weeks. I don't think she came all the way from Earth, just from some other station humanity is located, which may not have been far.
And even if she was back on Earth, maybe solving the gravity equation could have made ships travel much faster?

THOUGHT at the time of the explanation to be anomalies. We are later SHOWN that anomalies, in fact, were quite intentional.
Therefore, based on what we are shown - his crash was intended.

Two weeks, not two years

Entirely plausible, and I never thought of it this way.

Was it? I got the sense that she was still holding a grudge. (Redheads hold them forever..trust me).
The scene was very hard to interpret.

I could be wrong but I remember after he woke up the doctor told him his daughter was coming to see him and it was a two year trip.
