Buying experiences with furniture stores

My wife and I have been shopping for living and dining room furniture for our new house the last 6 months, and let me say, I would have never guessed what a huge cluster frick it's been. Living in Houston I thought it would be pretty simple, there's furniture stores everywhere you look. WRONG. The big national brands like Lazyboy and Bassett range from shitty to criminally shitty. The big local shops all sell bougie crap for the most part. Our only luck so far has been with the independent (and pricey) dealers, and Amish made stuff. What is a person left with besides getting a decorator? I know retail in general is a miserable experience, but is furniture like in its own special circle of hell? Why is this industry so shitty?

Don't get a decorator unless you want to ensure that half your stuff is fuschia

But you can get it interest free for 100 months!!!!!!

Worked in a furniture store long ago.
It's all cheap plywood, particle board, and polyurethane rubber.

the markup on furniture is crazy high too.
i worked at a furniture store for a year in college. like car dealerships, you can negotiate furniture prices. if they are unwilling to negotiate, walk away.
go check out some factory liquidator furniture stores. they buy all the stock from failing furniture stores for dimes on the dollar and sell them for a decent price.

About to be in the same boat as you. Looked at Haverty's, Furniture Superstore and Olindes over the weekend just because they're all on the same stretch in Baton Rouge. Seems to be no rhyme or reason to the pricing.

That's marked up 300%. That's not a typo, it's 300%.

Check around for antique auctions. Much better quality unless you need contemporary. The older wood is also much cheaper than new plywood...

Antiques are fine for wood furniture, sofa and chairs, not so much.

I will tell you one thing about furniture. There is about a 500% markup and it's all negotiable. I've never bought a piece for the states price.

My dentist told me when he finished dental school he and his wife went to buy dining room furniture.
The salesman started talking and asked him what he did for a living. He replied he was a dentist, and the salesman showed him the most expensive dining room set in the store.
My dentist friend said he looked the salesman in the eye and said, "we wanted something a little nicer."
