While met struggled early on certainly he was never as bad as Jennings. Also, at least met showed some progress and improvement and as others have said flashes of brilliance throughout the year. AJ seems to be getting worse as the season progresses
"Never" is kind of a strong word, don't you think? Hindsight will look kindly on ZM, but he was HORRIBLE at the start of his SEC career
Mettenberger's first four (4) SEC starts:
49/106 46% 143 YPG 1 TD 2 INTs (his stats actually got worse from start 1 to start 4)
Jennings first three (3) SEC starts [He didn't start against AU this year]:
30/61 49% 129 YPG 2 TDs 0 INTs

Was JJ really THAT bad?
The record book shows he is a top 10 QB at LSU and never as bad as Rant portrays.
I guess he's still playing arena ball.

Man,
It amazes me how stupid people on this board are. All the guy is saying is we had a fourth year junior come in and struggle out of the gate. That guy stepped up his game before Cam even got here and when Cam arrived the transformation was completed.
That gives me hope that when we have a true sophomore struggle just like that fourth year Junior did, and Cam is here to guide him, things will eventually turnaround.
It's not about whether Mett's ceiling was higher. It's about recognizing that Jennings can/will be a much better QB than he is now.
Some guys just develop at a different pace. Hell Joe Flacco had to leave Pitt because as sophomores Tyler freaking Palco was just farther along. Now Joe has a Super Bowl ring and Palco's out of work.

Yeah I wish we had something other than two future all pros on the outside.....
If I were a big armed QB I would rather 2014 Dural over 2012 either of the WRs.
I can't state this enough, I am a huge Jarvis Landry fan. I think he is one of the greatest WRs at LSU. What he isn't is a deep threat.
OBJ is great too. But i think he was overrated as a deep threat.
Hooking up a big armed QB with a guy who gets past defenders like Dural would have been huge for Mett.

Now if he could throw a 20 yard out on a dime, then we could compare him to mett
(i actually did the math this time; the ball is in the air for roughly 29 yards)

You're reaching by comparing Jennings to Mettenberger.
Yes, Jennings will improve, but he has a limited skillset so that the expected improvement will not come close to what we saw Mettenberger do. We can only hope that we cover his limited abilities with other stuff (QB runs, improved running game, etc.).
Oh, and one reason I don't think we see WR screens is that Jennings can't get the ball to them fast enough for the WR to do something with the ball before they are covered up. Mett could zip the ball to the sideline with enough velocity for the WR to make a move.
Mett could make every throw on the field. Jennings can't.

So funny how people revise history. People were calling for Rivers in 2012 just like they are Harris now. Believe me I know Harris is a far better talent. I mention it only to point out that there was a time when the fan base was severely down on Mett. He got Better. Jennings and Harris will get better. Maybe not as good as Mett but good enough to win games.

FWIW
That's a button hook or a curl route. Hell he didn't even turn his outside shoulder but rather his inside. Quinn ran an out route.

Do you know what an out is?
I like Jennings, but are you really trying to compare his arm to mett

Neither were the deep threat that Dural is. Dural is averaging 25+ yards a catch. thats more than either Jarvis or OBJ averaged at LSU. I am not saying Dural is better, but having a deep threat like Dural would have been huge in 2012. I think OBJ is overaed as far as being a deep threat goes. he is fast, and hell go up and grab a ball, but he doesn't get anywhere near the separation you see with Dural or even what we would see with Rueben Randle.
Just stop dude. In 2012, Mett over threw every WR going deep, by 5 yards. He had zero touch on deep passes. If you want, I could look up countless of threads on this during that time.

Mett's first year starting was under Studrawa. AJ's first year starting is under Cam.
Mett already learned a year under Bobo at UGA, had already played a year at JUCO also. He was also a redshirt junior. There was no reason for his production to be that bad.
quote:
2. Mett's got significantly (significantly) more arm strength and throwing ability than AJ.
Yet we are here talking about production. In 8 games Mett 200 passes, 1411 yards, 56% completion, 7 TDs 4 ints. In 8 games Jennings 128 passes, 1048 pass yards, 50% completion, 7 TDs 3 ints.
Did Bobo not develop Shockley, Greene, Stafford, and Murray? Shouldn't Mett have been better by not only having a year with Bobo, but a whole year starting at JUCO? Why after 3 years in college, with the height and arm strength everybody keeps going on about, did he not produce better in 2012? Why is he pretty much even in production with Jennings after 8 games?

He had issues on the deep ball, but could still connect from time to time. His intermediate passing set him apart.
He showed up vs Bama. If AJ does the same vs Ole Miss this week or Bama, I'll certainly change my mind about him.

quote:i cant believe this is even in dispute. he was so consistently 5 to 10 yards long on every deep ball that i was even optimistic about it, because it seemed like a very fixable problem, the throws were accurate, just too long. he simply needed coaching and practice. which he got.

1. He was as bad as the rant portrays him. He once threw a shuttle pass to a linebacker. IN a national championship game
2. What category is he top 10 in? Wins maybe but there is a whole team that contributes to that.

quote:jesus christ you people are so sad. i didnt say it was an out, did I? but i already had this gif and assumed it would be close enough to show Jennings arm strength on these throws.
Do you know what an out is?
but i guess in your world, if Diarse had turned 5 feet to the right instead of the left, Jennings would have put the ball in the stands, right?
