Something under $50.
the kid likes hunting, fishing, 4wheeling, etc.
is he too young for a pocket knife?

Knife would not be a first choice, still young. Lives in city or rural area?

Does he have a BB gun yet?

Tigerdeacon Jr. is about to turn 5 so here are some things I think he would like:
1. Something that shoots real bullets.
2. Something that explodes.
3. A real bulletproof vest
4. A huge bowie knife or machete
5. Real bullets, no matter what caliber
Realistically, some good choices would be:
A shooting game that shoots soft nerf bullets so he can practice gun safety.
Anything camouflage, shirts, pants, etc.
A cheap pair of binoculars
Maybe a "grownup" fishing combo.

I'm not sure about a BB gun. I would think he does though.
Chad, is that all kid sized stuff?

My 5 yr. old loves his knife. CRKT makes it. It's called Nathan's Knife. I helped him paint and put it together.

I bought my son a Daisy Red Rider when he turned 5. Started with gun safety from the get go. And the result is a 14 year old kid who has impeccable muzzle control, trigger awareness, handling skills, etc. The real gift was in the follow up activities.

what about a spotting scope

Get him a stud finder, wrapping paper rolls, a roll of duct tape, a few big boxes, a cheap tape measure. Thats the kind of shite my kid played with at 5.

A daisy BB gun. Never to early to start gun safety, and it will be fun for him as well.

ETA: or a sling shot.

if you get a bb gun, get the Daisy "BUCK". The red Ryder is way too long in the stock for young kids

Agree with the above. The Red Rider is too big for my 5 yr old. I'm going to get him the Buck for christmas - maybe sooner.
I got my 7 yr old nephew a sling shot for his birthday He's had fun with it.
My 5 yr old loves flashlights - something rubber coated that can be dropped.
Most boys love a "kid version" of whatever his Dad does or uses. Mine has a tool box with mostly plastic tools but a couple small real ones as well. He uses it all the time when he is playing in the shop while I am out there.
A short 4.5 or 5 ft pole with a small zebco. At 5 they have outgrown the mickey mouse poles.
a cheap pair of Binos would be a good choice as well.
