Bayou Bengal, who are you with? I'm at TD Ameritrade at $10/trade, so I personally limit my trades. With $500, you're down 2% at the get go, 4% if you count your future sale.

Yeah I wish I was investing during the BP disaster in the Gulf.

I'm with TD Ameritrade too, but ONLY for commission free ETFs.
I use Tradeking at 4.95 per trade.
But most importantly, checkout Computershare for NO fee DRIPs.

There are no drip fees with TD.

But you've still got to pay the $9 commission right?
Posted on 10/13/14 at 11:51 am to bayoubengals88
You only pay $10 when you buy or sell. The dividends you reinvest are done for free.

Thats good to know, but if I'm only going to invest $100-200/month 5 to 10% commission would kill me.
with Computershare it's all company paid (for COP and XOM).
ETA: Halliburton anyone? approaching 52 week low.

Speaking of BP, any of you oil and gas people? Hearing some "interesting" things about them and what lies ahead...

I've heard tons of rumors from all the majors lately so certainly not sure what to believe.

Rumors have been out for awhile. People have been leaving/forced out for awhile, but layoffs are supposedly coming, to the tune of around 5k, maybe more. Have also heard about more asset sale(s) from the GOM, with specific players finally being mentioned. Thoughts are they're pulling out of OPS in the GOM.

I have a work 401k through Fidelity so I decided to open up an individual account in order to have everything in 1 place. I have a few thousand $$$ ready to jump into the market and I will likely just in on some of these oil companies, specifically COP. Do dividends automatically re-invest or are they added as cash in the portfolio? I have no clue as I've never owned individual stocks.

The term reinvestment by definition should mean that the div. goes straight toward new shares, but I don't know anything about Fidelity. It might not work that way? It's best to call. Anyone else know??
I like COP
Are you going to wait a bit longer?

Fidelity allows DRIP. You can elect to automatically reinvest.
Posted on 10/13/14 at 4:41 pm to TigerTatorTots
With Scottrade, there's what's called "Flexible Reinvestment" where you can take your dividends and allocate them to whatever stocks you want, or you can just get cash directly deposited into your account if you don't use the "FRIP".

Fidelity allows DRIP. You can elect to automatically reinvest.

They were trading in the low $50s after the split. Still for not buying a shite load and holding.

Either or. Its a preference you go in and change.
Posted on 10/14/14 at 9:41 am to Big Saint
Can't wait for my money to clear today or tomorrow. I will be jumping on COP's plunge ASAP.

COP down another 2.75% today. Another couple percentage points and we will be at $65
