Give me the Stones. Brian Jones was a musical genius who didn't received near enough credit for his contributions. With that said, I love the Mick Taylor era. Their live work in '72 and '73 rock. If you haven't heard "Brussels Affair '73", check it out - especially the original boot. The stretch of All Down The Line, Rip This Joint, Jumping Jack Flash, and Street Fighting Man to end the show..... amazing.

I loved Keith Richards slagging on Brian Jones in his autobiography. The guy dinked around on the sitar for 3-4 years just so they could get one good song. Jones was an unreliable drug addict who barely played on the Stones' best records, if at all.

Keith Richards is a guitar god because he understands one truism almost all guitar players forget: play the f'n riff.

And he probably created more instantly recognizable riffs as intros to songs than anyone else.

IMO the beatles are in a category all their own. I guess ultimately it comes down to taste, but I think that having 4 albums in the top 10 of Rolling Stone magazine best albums, and 3 in the top 5, speaks to the general consensus.

Any knock on the beatles really tell me 2 things about a person, one, they were probably a misfit or bullied at some point in their lives and rebelled against establishment, and two, that they just don't have good taste in music. The Beatles wrote songs everyone would like. That is their genius.

not knocking your pick of the Beatles, but the Rolling Stone proves nothing. That magazine went to shite decades ago.

The RS 500 was assembled by the editors of Rolling Stone, based on the results of two extensive polls.

Regardless, it's very hard to argue for the Rolling Stones over the Beatles. We could also look at number 1 singles for each band:

Beatles 22 > Rolling Stones 8

Better at what?

As a side note, if we are going to get away from Beatles v. Stones and talk about individuals, at least Mick stuck to the Stones.

Paul started turning out one piece of crap after another.

Stones were better at blues and hard rock. The Beatles were better at pop rock and ballads. I like all of that so it is all good to me.

...but when I say Beatles, I mean Beatles. I really have no desire to see Paul McCartney by himself. I just don't like the guy personally, and he seems to get worse the longer he stays alive. I have no beef with Ringo, but he sucks alone to be honest. The other two are dead of course.

The Stones seem pretty cool if you get past some of their eccentric aspects and druggie histories. I'm not a huge fan of their music, but I would much rather hang out with them.
