it's honestly refreshing to hear a QB say those things. Mett was honest about his play. his predecessor was not

Seattle also has Russel Wilson, Marshawn freakin' Lynch, and an o-line made up entirely of professional football players

so college teams shouldn't try to emulate nfl teams?

when your o-line is not playing well your playcalling is limited.

it all starts at the lines....on both sides of the ball

this is not something new that i just made up

I don't understand why we literally haven't run 1 of these plays.

We literally ran a few of them this past game. Hell, we run RB screens pretty much every game.

Nebraska offense of mid-1990s...imagine with a better QB than Frost or Crouch not too much option with a little more passing.

I've been begging for a naked bootleg for 10 years. IT ALWAYS WORKS. If on first down from the 2 against MSU, Jenning runs a bootleg, he scores. Alabama scores half of their inside the 10 yard line TDs this way. I get pissed just thinking about it. Never gets called.

well IMO (I don't make over 4 million like our coach) trying to run into the teeth of defenses with a weak oline is futile. Maybe..just maybe we should try some misdirection and finesse...oh i don't know spreading the field and then attacking teams might work. Teams with less talent seem to employ this type of sorcery

how many games does it take to realize we can't run the offense we want and be effective?

as for the defense i don't know what we should do...just hope the offense can sustain more drives is all i got

but it doesn't limit it to what we've been calling.

that's running straight into our weakness, and doesn't really make much sense doing so.

I think laying this at the feet of the O-line is a bit unwarranted.

Remember all those first down plays where we kept getting 6-9 yards a pop on the ground? Auburn's run defense is typically pretty stout and we were getting decent chunks from time to time on 1st down.

And I thought they protected the QB's well enough. Harris had time to make some throws...he just bailed at the first sign of trouble too much. If we had any semblance of an intermediate passing game, I think the O-line would provide enough time for the QB's to throw.

the protection was there for the most part.

harris sailed some, and left the pocket too early on others, but protection was there.

so with that protection, maybe you can mix it up with some variations of what the OP is asking for.

maybe?

I agree. It's hard to run plays that take some time to develop when your OL doesn't give you that time. However, at some point you just have to accept that your OL is not very good and adjust accordingly. We're halfway through the season. The OL is not going to get drastically better. They are what they are at this point.

That being the case, why not try to compensate as best as you can? Put the QB in shotgun more (even to run the ball between the tackles); move away from almost exclusively running deep routes and go to more quick passes; use the intermediate middle of the field; get your QB out of the pocket some. There may be a little more risk involved in this type of playcalling with young QBs, but what difference does it make when your ultra-conservative approach only leads to 20+ point deficits going into the 4th quarter.

Lost in all of the bad play is IMO the one bright spot this year, the play of the WR corps. You've got at least 4 guys here (Dural, Diarse, Dupree, Quinn) who have shown they can make plays. They've been the best unit on the filed. Wouldn't it a good idea to try to get the ball in their hands as much as possible? Lets see if Diarse can break tackles/make plays after the catch like he did against Wisc. and on a few occasions late against AU. It's been tough to cover Dural. Cross him underneath and let him use his speed to outrun some guys. Quinn is willing to go into the short middle and take a hit. Get these guys the ball!!!!

Agree.

I really thought the screen game was going to be effective after the Wisconsin game. There were 2 occasions where if Jennings could have gotten the ball to Fournette on the screen, Fournette would have had huge plays. That gave me hope, but we haven't been able to execute one since.

I have never been one to complain about the so-called "Vanilla offense", especially when it has worked so well at times in the past , but damn if Auburn's offense wasn't fun to watch the other night. They had so many things going on and so many moving pieces that were working well together. I don't expect to be just like them...but it seemed like we were watching a polished Corvette battle a rusty old Edsel this past Saturday. Maybe our offense won't run like a Corvette....but can we at least upgrade to a Honda Civic or something?

This is the most befuddling offensive problem to me. We have young QB's who need confidence early in games. Best way to do that is screens and slants in the short passing game.

Watch the auburn game did ya? BH sailed his 1st tow curl routes which are aim and throw.

A slant is aim, throw, and add the element of timing

So its easy to see why a slant is being called. Its a harder throw. Also an unnoticed cover 2 backer could easily jump ot for a pick 6

Miles has had prep problems
His whole tenure here. Harris is just saying what he has to say. Player speak. Did harris do bad? Sure. However he was not put in a real position to succeed due to the square peg round hole philosophy of les.

I remember early in Saban and Fisher's career at LSU, LSU did not have all the talent and had to adjust offensively until that talent arrived. Fisher got creative and did a lot of things to help the offense.
