Impact of tattoos in a professional environment

I'm sitting here at work (large engineering firm), and I couldn't help but notice this. Seems that anyone with a tattoo holds a lower paying/non essential position, and all the important positions are filled by those without one.
Is this because tattoos are unprofessional/trashy, or just coincidence?

I have 3 tattoos.
I guess I'll just go panhandle right now.

It is because people who are competent and professional do not have tattoos (or at least visible ones).

Or most people with visible tattoos were already not on a path to succeed.

just coincidence
if the guys with the ink brought in a Master Service Agreement with 7-figures of annual fees, he would be up the ladder in a heartbeat

I have none yet am still a bottom feeder. Should I strip naked in front of my boss to prove my worth to the company?

i can tell you 90% of the trash in the oilfield has tattoos, while those who move up the ladder, are the 10% who do not

i worked with a Linux engineer that had a full sleeve...and he wore short sleeve shirts on the reg...one of the smartest and highest paid individuals on that team...if you know your job...and have a fricking masters....most employers wont give a frick....if they do, i wouldn't work for them...i have a lower arm tattoo as well...not a full sleeve, and haven't had not one employer mention it...

In 10-20 years CEOs of companies will have full sleeves.

No. It's because they are smart enough to not get it in a place that will be visible at work. They have them to.

I have tattoos and just got selected for the Jiffy Lube part-time assistant manager training program... so much for your theory.

I think that's because they're not considered trashy by the younger crowd, who would tend to hold more of the entry-level positions.
I was raised that they were for sailors, bikers, and convicts, but times have changed, though I still can't imagine anything I'd want marking my body like that for life (and I can sure as hell guarantee that whatever I would have thought was cool at 21 isn't something I'd feel that way about now).

I too work at an engineering firm. Guy across from me has full sleeves and makes well over 100k. You'd never know he has tats because he wears long sleeve shirts
