i can't relate to what you or the OP are talking about, nor have i observed it in general. it certainly is not a value my cajun family shared. sounds more like OP and those agreeing are simply awful people (condolences), and projecting. also, our beloved football program is in trouble, and the causes have les miles and les miles alone written all over them. but by all means, carry on crying about your vacuous perception of our culture, while calling others "self-loathing."
I find it really curious how you managed to tie the two together in your post.
I agree with the OP *and* I think Miles needs to GTFO ASAP. Are you trying to tell me those are mutually incompatible viewpoints?

French culture
Very much so (at least Cajun-French). This explains our politics, family relationships, and our attitude about our state.
That's a whole lot of Catholic-French inertia in play. I'm in a position to recognize this...you'd agree if you knew my mother and family (from Avoyelles and Pointe Coupee).
As far as state pride and football, I think it's a combination of culture and decades of embarrassingly little to take pride in other than food and music....but the Catholic guilt thing and cajun culture keeps so many of them closer to where they grew up and keeps the ties to the family (for better or worse) very strong and often conflicted.
IMO, Louisiana (especially south Louisiana) is doing far better today than it ever has economically. Oil and gas, tourism, medicine, and even technology jobs are available for those that want them. Our cities have improved, our football has improved, and our opportunities have improved but people still don't take pride in what they have in front of them. That's nothing but the residual effects of the past.
It will take another generation for the love/hate relationship with Louisiana to change.

As an outsider who lived in BR only for college, what you said is something I recognised in my time there, and in my relatives who are from SE La. It truly is a trait unique to south Louisiana

I mean, you're exactly right.

seems pretty clear that the entire thread, baselessly shitting on a culture, was precipitated by today's 100% miles-inspired negativity.

I've always noticed it too and yes, the French are the biggest player haters in the world. They don't seem to want anyone they know to succeed at anything. The hatred for LSU is a perfect example.

Funny, but I didn't take that angle away from lsupimp's post at all.
If anything I thought it was aimed at the vitriol of the sunshine pumpers.

I think he read my OP as a PosiTiger Sunshine-pumper-Les-Apologist Rant and just went to work discrediting and insulting me rather than reading what I actually read.

Long knives kill apathy and self entitlement, sometimes brutality is necessary in order to reset.

this is how i read it, yes. if i read it incorrectly, what is the relevance of the comment, here and today?
regardless, the characterization of the culture remains vacuous.

LSU Fan--Yeah, we lost, but I'm still happy cause Bama lost.
USL fan, yeah we lost, but I'm happy cause LSU lost.
This mindset around south Louisiana is ridiculous.

There are negatigers and tiger haters. The difference between the two is negatigers want the Tigers to win. I believe the OP was describing Tiger haters and that hate based in south La culture.
It's unfortunate that negatigers get lumped in with the tiger haters by the sunshine pumpers.

It's an easily observable trait of our culture and something I have discussed with many friends over the last 30 years. I'm talking people from Crowley, people from New Iberia, people from New Roads. Sorry if that makes you uncomfortable.
And upvoted the comments about:

None of you know a damn thing about French culture and you have never been to France.
The problem is in the French culture they and "We in Louisiana" believe everything we have is the BEST. No matter how poor or shitty it is. It is called being full of yourself and not looking at reality.

Self-loathing is part of the South Louisiana character . If you grew up in South Louisiana you know what I'm talking about instinctively. It has to do with French culture and Louisiana history. It has to do with being pushed-around , having Little Man's Disease. It's why half of every neighborhood in South Louisiana lives to troll the other half. It's why being a contrarian is so highly valued in South Louisiana culture. When I was a kid it was people from say, Pointe Coupee Parish randomly pulling for Notre Dame and running down LSU, to the same thing now. I met a women this week that grew up in Baton Rouge, has ZERO connection to the University Of Alabama, and has two Bama flags in her yard, and sports a big Bama bumper sticker on her SUV. She knows less about college football or Alabama then you know about origami. She identifies with the flavor of the day to deny her neighbors in some way...and that is epidemic in South Louisiana. It's the psychology here. And right now it's time to get out the long knives . As a semi- outsider-someone from here, but not of here, I see it clearly. I'm NOT telling anyone how to feel about Les Miles and LSU, I'm just dreading the whole soap opera that is about to unfold. The cannibalism part where everybody pulls out the long knives. All the malice everybody has for everybody else, and the way it's done for sport here, just wears my arse out.

Not sure that's really what's going on. Does the board look "still happy" to you?
But, thinking the mindset of taking some measure of enjoyment from nothing other than seeing a hated rival lose a game is unique to ANY fan base... just lol.
