"Yeah because Mingo, Brockers, Nevis, Logan, Montgomery, etc have been so bad. Brick came here the same year when Chavis did in 2009. We have had very good DL play for four straight years before 2013. IMO it's more about the early departures than anything else. "
I don't think our DL play has been that good apart from '11. It seems we rarely get pressure on QB's apart from blitzes.

Except that Valentine has been practicing with the team and has been enrolled in school all semester. They just won't let him play. From what I have heard he has been consistently beating the first team OLine while playing scout team.

Redshirt freshman should not be expected to have good technique or any of those attributes listed. FFS, they're barely a year removed from HS. The problem is early departures forcing faster development. Luckily, it seems LSU hit gold with DG. He's going to be a great one.
I highly doubt Haley is here next year anyway. We'll probably be seeing a new dline coach.

Which really means nothing because our O-line sucks. Kind of like when we heard LF7 was unstoppable by our first team D...then we found out we cannot stop the run when the season arrived.

I haven't seen them do much of anything creative so far this season.
I've been wondering if we might see some pre-snap movement this year that we haven't seen in the past. Maybe something similar to what Wisconsin does. I remember Chief had his defensive lines doing some wild pre-snap stuff at times when he was at Tennessee.
The Chief has his work cut out for himself this year. It's going to be tough to compensate for the weaknesses on this defense, especially at DT. The point-of-attack, interior-push issues seem like they're going to be impossible to scheme around/coach up to a certain degree, but pre-snap movement, stunts, and run blitzes could help.
Also, I don't know if it's been mentioned in the thread yet, but Frank Herron has been having concussion issues.

Just like Brandon Harris???

LSU can't keep playing only THREE DT's for the whole game against these uptempo spread teams.
miss state wore the line out. there's depth, the coaches just need to get bain, gilmore, and herron on the field.

What is the basis of that statement. I read where someone else stated that but gave no baisi for why.

Apparently one needn't do well in practice in order to get in the games to "see how they perform."
don't tell me you're even buying this after seeing Harris light it up in a game while not doing well in practice. Gamers game, and practice players will do well in practice. Heck, wasn't Herron lighting it up in practice? And he's barely even sniffing the field.
god damn your reply is so retarded.
besides, if you look at the rotation we're currently going through, what does it hurt to try them out? You saw Lacouture and the rest of the line get completely gassed by the end of Q3 in the MSU game. Why not send some fresh bodies in there? Again, you never know how they react in a game when the lights are on.

We just haven't been recruiting enough of the big guys. We finally started recruiting enough o-lineman but need to pick up the pace with d-line. Like some one said, recruit more than you need, let the cream rise to the top, and cut the rest.

I completely agree. Others will point to the draft and say otherwise. Rasco and Hunter have a hard time disengaging and squezzing the pocket.

Honestly ! its hard to be good !

I think the problem with these guys is that they are in such a round state...need to shed a few lbs and get in better shape...you see Gilmore the other nite, huffing and puffing and round as hell...
coaching cannot always motivate a player to get in shape...

It would be nice to see a stunt, or even a swim move out of our DL.

I still say all 3 of those guys will be quality DTs. With Herron, I wonder if it is disciplinary given the coaches naming him starter when they thought QT was out for the year. I've said this several times, but these guys really are not progressing all that slowly. How many of our recent greats really contributed their first two years? Dorsey may have been the 3rd DT in the rotation but Brockers and Logan were redshirted and I don't recall hearing much from Nevis until his JR year. Godchaux and Lacouture are definitely the exceptions. We are feeling it this year because we didn't sign any DTs in 2012 but hindsight is 20:20 and no one would have guessed LSU would have sent more underclassmen to the NFL during that time than anyone else. You still have the 25 man yearly limit and the 85 total. On paper this is a transition year. No one wants to go through a transition but we have all the talent and an excellent coaching staff to continue to succeed long term.

Kinda reminds of how we had to get Garrett with Kenny Young as a back up plan.
Guess what, we have a guy with problems practicing in the heat while Kenny Young can run all day long.
Seems like some possible misses on positions of need recently

Agreed. I have it as Brockers, Logan, and then Nevis.

in a 4-3 defense for the most part you want your tackles keeping the guards off the MLB so he can fly around and make plays.
We have a MLB who takes the wrong angles, takes too long to diagnose plays, can't get there quick enough even when he does diagnose it, gets run over even when he does get there in time, doesn't shoot gaps when the DTs hold their man at the line...
This will make any set of DTs look bad.
so it's our MLB's fault our coaches haven't recruited Dline up to par.

Logan was the last great DT. Ego and Freak were good, not great.
Ego is starting in the NFL I think a lot of the flack these guys took last year was due to below average LB play
