srael says it has shot down a Syrian fighter jet over its airspace - the first such incident in more than 30 years.
The aircraft was hit by a Patriot missile while trying to "infiltrate" the Quneitra area of the Golan Heights, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said.
An Israeli defence source identified the jet as a Russian-built Sukhoi Su-24 fighter plane. Previously it was reported to have been a MiG-21 aircraft.
It flew 800 metres into Israeli airspace and tried to return to Syria after the Patriot missile was fired, he said.
The crew managed to abandon the plane in time and landed in Syrian territory, he added.
The Golan area, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war, has seen clashes between the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front and Syrian President Bashar al Assad's forces in recent weeks.
Syrian state TV confirmed Israel had shot down one of its planes, and described it as an act of aggression.
It quoted a military source saying the attack came "in the framework of (Israel's) support for the terrorist (Islamic State) and the Nusra Front".
frick yea

Who the hell is allied with who over there anyway? This is like three-dimensional chess.

I'll be honest. I'm lost. But it's football season. I always lose track of world affairs during football season.

One sure way to discredit any Islamic group as sellouts and collaborators is for that group to get help from Israel.

It's going to be a cluster frick over there.

Wow! Those Jooos have an itchy trigger finger.
I bet $10 he was lost. Putin is taking notes and directing his elite paratroopers to make sure they don't get "lost" around the Israeli border.

quote:Israel doesn't support either side but they usually just tit-for-tat against the Syrian government when they or their fire crosses the border into the Golan. (As Syria is still butthurt about Quenitra and Hezbollah does a lot of their fighting, this happens fairly regularly.)
Who the hell is allied with who over there anyway? This is like three-dimensional chess.
The stuff about ISIS is regime propaganda, there's no ISIS in that part of Syria and if there were Israel wouldn't be their buddies.

Just assuming the "800 meters" is true, and the su-24 was doing 480 knots, if he crossed the border perpendicularly, he was in their airspace for ~4 secs. More likely he was paralleling the border.

Going to be?

quote:The Su-24 is a ground attack aircraft. So what was an Su-24 doing where there was no ISIS presence? If it was a training flight gone errant, then it was pretty costly to Syria given the size of its air force. It would have been a pretty foolish flight path for an intelligence mission.

Whatever the reason, it should give any sane Syrian pilot pause before approaching Israeli airspace.

That's the way they do things in the Mideast. I remember a few years ago, Hezbollah blew away an Israeli armoured bulldozer operator clearing out mines near the Lebanese border, after which Israel immediately cried foul called for a U.N. investigation. Subsequently, the U.N. determined that the bulldozer was a few meters across the border when it was hit, at which point a Hezbollah spokesman said, "Two meters today, 20 meters tomorrow, two kilometers the next day, 200 kilometers the day after, and the next thing you know Israeli tanks will be rolling on the streets of Beirut."

Israel has a zero tolerance policy with their neighbors who want them dead. Both side stay on edge over there and both sides know very well what crossing into the other's territory means. Given their history, I put more blame on Syria for (ignorantly or intentionally) crossing that line when the consequences are well established.
