Mattis’s comments came two days after Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, took the rare step of publicly suggesting that a policy already set by the commander in chief could be reconsidered.
That's NOT what Dempsey said. Dempsey said that IF the situation called for it he would RECOMMEND combat troops to the President, which is his job to do.
quote:What Dempsey REALLY said
“My view at this point is that this coalition is the appropriate way forward,” Dempsey told the Senate Armed Services Committee. “I believe that will prove true. If it fails to be true and there are threats to the U.S., then of course, I would go back to the president and make the recommendation that may include the use of U.S. military ground forces.”
I'm not an Obama supporter but fail is fail.

McKeon added. “I would also request that he not take options off the table.”
I 100% agree with this.
quote:
Retired Marine Gen. James Mattis said “We may not wish to reassure our enemies in advance that they will not see American boots on the ground.”
I agree with this too.

Holy fricking shitLINK
Are you really surprised by that incompetent frick stick in office?
He is the most inept, self aggrandizing, corrupt politician in most of our lifetimes. Every action he takes is positioned in a way to portray his legacy. He does not have conviction behind any action, and he refuses to make tough choices, because then he would have to be accountable.
I am embarrassed for the liberals that still support him. As much of a failure Obama is, those still praising him are truly weak minded, and weak willed individuals.

Obama is saying no boots on the ground just out of arrogant prid
But he is putting boots on the ground to fight ebola. I guess our troops are going to shoot ebola when it comes out.
Incompetent in Chief

Americans don't want troops back in Iraq. By a huge margin. In theory, at least, we are a democracy.
But I guess this story doesn't play if it's "Rift widens between 75% of Americans, some retired military generals."

And George H.W. Bush warned not to take Saddam Hussein out of power because it would destabilize the entire region

This. And like I said, the military has most certainly underachieved in the ME since we arrived. This carte blanche of taking some retired man's opinion as gospel is ridiculous.
For all we know these guys are setting up a run for office - it's not like they've spent a day of their lives working in the private sector.

No we're a republic.

I think you have to add caveats such as: we're trying to kill the enemy but not hurt innocent civilians. The enemy doesn't play by any rules and neither should we IF we want to completely kill the enemy.

So basically your defense is to use Bush 1 to blame Bush 2, thereby totally absolving Obama?
That is weak even for you.
However this new alter is better than most of your past ones.

No we're a republic.

And it's not like Obama has spent a day on the battlefield with a rifle.
This argument can go both ways.

Brilliant strategy. Let's arm Syrian rebels, I see nothing wrong that can come of that.

I suggest some light reading by noted pussy liberal David Petraeus. Maybe start at 13-31: LINK

I'm not convinced ISIS is a real threat to the US. Therefore, I'm glad Obama is against boots on the ground. It's just not worth it to me unless there is a clear and present danger to the US.
Now our own border, that is a concern that needs to be addressed.

I would ask if this is the best you have but we both know the answer to that don't we?
"But Bush" isn't the effective defense of little barry you believe it to be.

Yeah, that's about as bad an idea as Obama could have come up with considering that a number of the "moderate" rebels have been giving ISIS US-issued equipment and even sold them some of those journalists who ended up beheaded.

Where were you when the recently retired 1st ID Commanding General did just that in 2005?
Posted on 9/19/14 at 9:00 am to SirWinston
The military has underachieved? By what metric? Poor strategic objectives lead to a failed campaign.
