Nothing else can be the GOAT until Karbach stops making Hop Delusion.

I was on a bachelor party the first time GITM was released and brought the group (about as far from Mavens as you can get) to Avenue Pub to try it out. The overwhelming majority said that the beer smelled like fart Most hated it. I told them nothing about the beer beforehand just that I would pay for it.
Very funny to see how non mavens react to a beer like that, most of them probably had never even heard of a DIPA.

to be fair, there were a few mavens who stated the same thing

I was dying, literally all 15 people were like "ya that is a fart in my glass"
To be fair, dank beers (and weed) often smell like farts.
Interesting that myself and most on here would probably agree it smells pretty awesome but the general public has a much different take on it, or at least my friends did.

IMHO, smell is nice but maybe only 10% of the beer drinking experience as long as its not a bad smell.
I disagree. The aroma makes up a huge part of the experience for me. There are beers that I will just continue to smell for a while before even having a sip, because they smell so incredible. And if you believe some of the studies that relate smell and taste, that makes aroma that much more important.
There are beers that I enjoy a lot more because they have such a great aroma that, if it wasn't there, I wouldn't find nearly as appealing.
Take Deep Ellum Dream Crusher for example. It's a good beer, but lacks that killer IPA aroma. And thus, people this year said it wasn't nearly as good as the first batch.
On the other hand, a beer like Stone Go To IPA may not have a huge flavor profile and is a bit thin, but the nose carries it a lot further than it would if it lacked it.
Just my 2 cents.

I shared my growler I got from the brewery the day after version 2.0 was released with 3 friends. One is a huge fan of the beer, another is a self professed IPA hater (I've seen the face he makes when he tries one) and the other branches out about as far as Shiner Bock.
The 2 non-mavens loved Ghost. They loved the aroma, the flavor and lack of back end bitterness. They said they would happily drink it if it were more widely available. I was shocked.

I should add that the vol 1 GITM I had at Avenue Pub had a completely different aroma from vol 2 I had last week at Bulldog, from what I remember.

I agree that aroma is a big component that does impact taste.
For example, my last IPA i brewed, is loaded with citra hops. However, i dry hopped with 1 oz simcoe, and 2 oz. citra. Simcoe is a very strong smelling hop, and so a good portion of the nose is piney hops. It has a very citrusy taste, almost a juicy fruit-ish flavor, but is less accentuated because of the simcoe hops. Next time i brew, i'll omit the simcoe dry hop. It's still really good.
And i agree about GITM being much better this year. Such a good flavor and nose. It will be one i try to replicate next year.

Ok, dammit. I need some GOAT.
I'll be in BTR this weekend for the game--does anyone have it on tap? Or for sale in bottles?
Please and thank you.

I have 4 bottles left. I'll sell each for $20.
