You can do your own basic maintenance including changing oil, plugs, and filters, and repacking the bearings on the landing gear wheels.
The maintenance you aren't allowed to do yourself does get ridiculously expensive though.

I'm about to start on my IFR cert. Once I am done with that, I want to start looking for something. But my gf is afraid of small planes, so the idea of flying vacations on my private plane may never happen.
In that case I could get a cheap two seater for myself to just build time.
I am shocked by what I can get for 20-30k.
I like retractable gear and constant speed props too, I need to get my Complex cert too.

Pops has a Cessna Skyhawk that he flies for shits and giggles (and I like to think smuggling runs), but we're not baller enough to have a jet.

If you need an airplane and can afford it, they are the greatest tool ever.
If you are seriously looking at aircraft to buy always and I mean always do the following.
1. Have a contract among partners and have everything on paper from monetary obligations to usage of the aircraft.
2. Don't buy more airplane than you need.
3. Don't put on charter, you don't make money you just get your airplane used and dirtied up.
4. Don't hire some scrub pilot who works cheap.
5. Do consult a tax pro and become familiar with the fact that you can comply with FAA rules yet be out of whack with IRS.
I've represented both owners and buyers in transactions from Cessna 182 through Gulfstream aircraft for almost 30 years and have found that those who stay in the owner business buy conservatively and hire good people to take care of them and their asset.

Remember, if it flies, floats or fricks, it's cheaper to rent. However, that said, unless flying yourself is the point of your vacation and you're going by yourself, forget that part of it. My Pop and I have owned 5 different airplanes and I can say without a doubt, my favorite to fly, easiest and cheapest to maintain has been our current 172. '62 with stick flaps, Bush STOL kit, 6 cyl engine and slanted tail. 100kts at 5.5 GPH is hard to beat for just fun or training.

I met Mrs. Favre once. My mother's neighbor in diamondhead, bay st. louis was real good friends with her. Anyway, back when I was a younger man, 10. My father was d.a., and he had a real good friend who had twin dc-3's. One was blakc/white (blackie), the other brown/white (brownie). Anyway, flew on each several times. My father took us to the bahamas one summer and on the way back, the airlines where on strike. So my fathers friend flew one of his planes to miami, and picked us up. The other memorable flight I recall is one sat. I was spending the night with one of my best friends, he lived on 80 acres with a private lake, his father was a dr. Used to have a blast there if you could imagine. Anyway, we wake up sat. morning ready to catch some fish and my mom calls and tells my friends mother to have me ready in 15 minutes. No reason was given, and I was really pissed, but I figured there was probably a death in the family. Anyway my sister picks me up and low and behold, my fathers friend is flying in to pick us up and take us to houston for the weekend to watch the stros. He had seats in a suite. Flew us back on Sunday after the game. csb

see, I'm thinking it wouldn't be that bad. Get a nice Archer or Skyhawk with about 1000 TBO, then I can park it at AMA (St. Charles) for $25 a month.

I don't need a hanger. I will keep a cover on it.
I can do most of my own maintenance. I want to take quick trips to Destin, Austin and the like.
Maybe do fly-ins.
I currently rent. Costs about $100 an hour. (including fuel) so maybe renting is the best option.
But I want to be able to take trips with it.
Fly to the Smokies, the Grand Canyon and all.
Teach the girls to fly (would like to get my CFI as well)

For instance, if a 152 is due for major overhaul at 3000 hours, and the plane has 2800 hours on it, then you've only got 200 hours until you have to dump thousands into it to keep it air worthy.

oh yeah. The TBO times are very important to me. I know an overhaul is like $8000.
(Which pisses me off to no fricking end, because I look at the engine and it looks like the engine from a VW beetle, except with two plugs a cylinder.
I also know I can get a rebuilt conntinetal or Lycoming for like $1500-2000, yet to rebuild my engine is $8k?)

I passed my private check ride 2 weeks ago and also have the bad habit of checking eBay aircraft every day. Keep in mind that buying an rg will pretty much double insurance costs and add to maintenance.

unless you're in the airline business, airplanes are not investments or moneymakers, it's kind of like a yacht, you want it because you want it and that's the only justification, I've a friend who retired on top of the corporate world who's had company owned jets from the cheapest up to leasing the Concorde, his take is that there's no justification except for limiting wear and tear on the CEO, so that he/she can work and rest on the flight, and be ready to hit the ground working when you get there

Darn.
If I get a plane it will probably be a fixed Archer 140 or an older Skyhawk.
I would like to be in $20k-30.
This won't probably happen until at least 2018.
