Babies are fine, they usually cry and pass out. It's the 3-5 year olds throwing temper tantrums because they can't sit still for 2 hours that are the worst. There is nothing wrong with disciplining your kid on a plane... otherwise sedate them.

I wasn't postulating the parent to be the narcissist. I'm talking about the fact that the parent feels compelled to do such a thing for fear they are violating others; they feel this way because they know how self-important everyone is.
It is very unfortunate that parents have to feel so judged by others. The worst is when someone without kids judges a parent for their decisions. Luckily I don't pay any attention to it but I was shocked to see how often it occurs once I became a parent.

We were definitely getting some looks. On the other hand, the couple behind us was great.

Do you negatively judge the parent(s)?
No.

Do you automatically dread the flight even more?
Nope.

And if the baby cries half the time plus, then what?
Then nothing. Babies cry.

Or do you just throw in the headphones and move on with your life?
Pretty much.

I buy a new bag of earplugs when we fly with our infant and offer them to those around us if she cries at all along with an apology.
No one takes them, but people appreciate the thought. Luckily she has never cried for more than 5-10 min.

I look forward to sitting in a row with parents and a kid. When I tell them that I have young kids too and nothing their kid will do is new to me so don't worry, they are so relieved and thankful. I can put up with the crying/screaming. My blood pressure stays low, the parents are less stressed, and the kid has a better experience overall.

I got stuck on the tarmac at ATL heading to BOS for about an hour or two before takeoff. Baby lost its damn mind in the row behind me. The headphones I had were ones lifted off a United flight( ).
Anywho, this baby was going nuts for an hour straight or more. It was unbearable but we just tried to manage it, but could tell other passengers were starting to give the look.
I did promise that day we would either avoid air travel with an infant or bring ear plugs, because it was not normal crying but screeching.

If it's an infant that's crying it sucks but you can't fault the parents for flying for whatever reason. If it's a bratty 2,3,4,5 year old that's screaming then I judge the parents.
