I've flown for the past 2 days, and what I've seen is not "strong". We cut a couple of groups of bluewings in the flooded ag. north of Lacassine Pool and southeast of Welsh, but not much else. Those groups will probably make the survey better than last year, but that isn't saying much.
We counted maybe 1,500 on Catahoula Lake this morning, which was real disappointing because I was helping with a shorebird survey up there on Saturday and saw at least 5,000.
I have heard good reports from a couple of our banding crews in ag fields, a gator hunter, and another land-manager in central Louisiana. But what I've seen thus far on the survey would be "better than last year, but still pretty meager".

Larry, my suspicions are that SELA sucks right about now, are you able to shed any light on that at this time? Thanks!

Not yet. I'll fly the easternmost 6 lines and finish the survey tomorrow.

Keep us undated and thanks.
Last week I saw a lot of birds just north of BR. Same spot yesterday, I didn't see any. Hope they didn't already head to Mexico. We need to guard our border closer to keep them here.

Not in September, but in November, December, and January, we do a 1-day survey of selected habitats in NW LA. See paragraph 6 of the COMMENTS section of the document at: LINK

Don't worry, the birds we are seeing are almost all adult males (the first bluewings to migrate), and as of yesterday, the Dakotas were still ate-up with bluewings. So not only haven't they passed through, according to my colleague in North Dakota, they aren't showing any obvious signs of wanting to leave there.
