Majority of those states have high minority percentages too. As for South Dakota, Montana, and Maine, I don't know what their problem is.

It's like most of you guys don't even read the article. This article, like 5000 before it, is bullshite because it's not talking about welfare, it's talking about federal employment vs. taxes. Well a lot of those states have much lower costs of living, as such, taxes will be lower, but the government can also pay them less.

It's like the repubs don't want to read, and the libs can't do math.

Any state with natives and lots of federal land is going be highly "dependent" on the federal government, if that's how some people view this kind of list. Without some context, it's pretty worthless

1) Return on Taxes Paid to the Federal Government - Gee, gosh, golly, maybe that's why most of the states are smaller in population? they paid less in Fed taxes?

2) Federal Funding as a Percentage of State Revenue - Gee, gosh, golly, maybe because red states chose not to crush their citizenry with taxes, maybe?

3) Number of Federal Employees Per Capita - WTF kinda metric is that? Numbers for small states are easily tilted for Coast Guard, border guards, deseg cases, voting rights monitoring, atomic energy, This is BS

Wait, so because those states decide they'd rather be Welfare queens than pay their own fair share they're conservative. I mean that's in large part the conservative mentality, but I just wanted to make sure you understood what you were saying.

What I find perplexing is that the vast majority of war on poverty money has been funneled down to the southern states, but the money has not made a dent in the low economic rankings of these states.

No, its not perplexing. The majority of the people in those states are not getting handouts. They vote red, because everyday they see tons people(no pun intended) getting free shite for nothing.

I can tell you the business leaders and middle class in west-central Louisiana are going hard to the hoop to keep Fort Polk open regardless of whether there's a national security need for it. I daresay the vast majority of those folk vote GOP and are against government largesse-except when they benefit from it.

Meh. We'd just let loose some of the chokes in Texas, and the o&g would keep flowing.

I had a friend who was from New Mexico, they said it was the worst place to live and survive and couldn't wait to leave...but I've never been to Mississippi.

...and survive? Did you mention to him it would probably be more bearable if he rented an apartment and bought his food at the store rather than living in a tent and hunting with his bare hands?

New Mexico is a beutiful place, especially Albequerque/Santa Fe area. The city lights of Albequerque at night headed east into the city are fricking breathetaking.

I wouldn't want to live there though. Too remote.

It's because those states have small economies without major industry.

Therefore, there will be more poor people, and less taxes paid.

Has nothing to do with the political views of the residents or how they vote.

But they're long time red states.........hmmm..........wonder how they ended up that way????

Those places are, from what I've been told. Places I've been in NM are Lea and Eddy Counties. The oil and gas activity out there is a HUGE funder of NM's government, especially education. However, that area is desolate as all get-out.

Oh, and the Federal Government owns about 70 percent of the land and 70 percent of the minerals out there too. Is the 50% revenue sharing states get from federal minerals part of this handout equation? Because if so, that could be a driver in NM being on this list.

Just think if that was all state and private minerals instead.

I'm sure if you take a look at the precincts where those handouts are given, they're solidly blue.

Oh, and thank God someone started this thread. It hasn't been done in at least 3 weeks.
