Hell no if you saw him in college he was great. if he had an offensive line, his stats would have been outstanding. I still have his saints jersey. Still fits and looks good. Wore it last week to my wife's dismay

Ask someone who isn't a total Ole Miss/Saints slappy and report back.

If Manning had this, if Manning had that, blah, blah, blah. I can only comment on his pro career and it was mediocre save for one to two years. Coulda, shoulda, woulda holds no weight. He didn't.

Oh, and I still have a Flexkateers t-shirt that is now two sizes too small and my wife would kill me if I wore it.

No, but you can compare his passing stats to his peers at the time.

True and he was also a SEC player of the year and finished in the top 4 of the heisman twice. So he was obviously viewed as somewhat of a standout compared to his peers.

Some interesting stats on Archie:

quote:

Archie was selected in the Major League Baseball draft four times, first in 1967 by the Braves, twice by the White Sox, and finally by the Royals in 1971

quote:

In the first national prime time broadcast of a college football game (1969), Manning threw for 436 yards and three touchdowns, also rushing for 104 yards

quote:

In both 1969 and 1970, he was named to the All-SEC team and his No. 18 jersey was retired by Ole Miss

quote:

In 1969, Manning was Mississippi Sportsman of the Year and recipient of the Nashville Banner Trophy as Most Valuable Player in the Southeastern Conference in addition to winning the Walter Camp Memorial Trophy.

quote:

He was fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1969 and third in 1970. Manning was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989.

quote:

Manning's legacy is honored to this day on the campus of Ole Miss where the speed limit is eighteen miles per hour in honor of Manning's jersey number.

quote:

In 1972 he led the league in pass attempts and completions and led the National Football Conference in passing yards, though the team's record was only 2–11–1.

quote:

In 1978, he was named the NFC Player of the Year by UPI after leading the Saints to a 7–9 record. That same year, Archie was also named All-NFC by both the UPI and The Sporting News. Manning was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1978 and 1979.

He simply played in a different era than today's game and by all accounts was highly respected among his peers, despite being pretty much the only marquee player on his teams. So by today's standards, no…he wouldn't be considered great. But during his time, he obviously was. The Saints haven't retired his number yet but they also haven't reissued it since 1982.

Yep he brought tears to my eyes twice. Just like Eli he took shitty Ole Miss teams and made them competitive.
Stats don't always tell the whole story.

Why is Joe Montana considered a great quarterback?

He isn't in the top 10 for career passing yards or passing touchdowns.

No, but is his TD:INT ratio similar?

By OP's standards, Billy Cannon was an average player. He won the Heisman with less than 1000 Yards from scrimmage. That sucks! different game!

I agree you cannot compare passing yards and attempts to today's quarterbacks. But look at his INT percentage per yards or touchdowns. It's too high! INT's thrown has nothing to do with his supporting cast

Uh Joe Montana was near the top in almost every single category compared to his peers for a large # of years.

Archie was not

quote:

marquee player on his teams

And with the Saints best team during his time (1979) as QB, with 5 pro bowlers on offense, he had a pretty shitty year

None. Just have always heard about how great he was and never really questioned it. Then I was watching SEC network the other day of a replay of '97 Tennessee versus auburn and they showed a graphic comparing Archie's college career stats versus Peyton's and it was embarrassing. So I looked up his stats and I came up with this question

Bro…they played in two different eras. You can't compare their stats to each other. So how did you look up his stats and simply gloss over all of the stats I posted above and choose to ignore them?

Again, I'm no Archie apologist but I can recognize the fact that what he did….in his day….was outstanding. Would he be considered great? Maybe not. But he definitely wasn't the hot garbage you're trying to make him out to be.

In 1969, Archie threw for 1762 yds, 9 TDs, 9 INTs, and also rushed for 504 yds and 14 TDs. In the first nationally broadcast college football game, he threw for 436 yds and 3 TDs, while rushing for 102 yds. Those were gargantuan numbers at the time.

ETA: Those were huge numbers in the SEC. Nationally, Dennis Shaw from SDSU threw for 3185 yds, 39 TDs, 26 INTs, while rushing for an additional 6 TDs. He threw for 14 more TDs than anyone else in the NCAA, and amassed 12 more total TDs than anyone in the country that year.

Im sorry, I know the game was way different back then. But if you are on average throwing more picks then touchdowns, then you are not some amazing quarterback that people are making him out to be. Maybe for his time, he was one of the best. But that just says everybody sucked back then
