I was planning on getting a green egg yesterday until people starting saying the XL was better.
what are the advantages and disadvantages to both.
XL - Made in America
Green Egg - Made in Mexico

I've got an egg, don't have experience with the other but the egg is as advertised, I love it(I can see this getting moved over to another board)

Im in the process of finding the best combo for grilling smoking. getting a Kamato and something like a smokey mountain or go the 2 in one cheap route.

ah you know how everyone has to get pissy just for pissy's sake, someone usually will come in and condemn this to the Food and Drink board, maybe just to drive up their post count, who knows?

From my understanding, they are pretty much the same. The shape/size of the primo gives it a larger surface area. They are both high quality ceramic kamodo grills.

In my opinion the XL is better and here is why:
Primo is oval thus giving you straight edges which lends itself to more efficient use of space IMHO. It also has a larger cooking area. Also because it is oval you can actually split the firebox in half and only use one side for smaller cooks. The split firebox also allows true indirect cooking which cannot be done on an egg that I am aware of. For indirect cooks on the egg you must use deflector plates that basically just deflect the heat that is directly under the meat around and over. I also think these deflector plates are extras that must be bought. With that said, if you wanted to use the whole fire box on a primo to smoke you would also have to use deflector plates that are extra. However, I have owned my Primo for a while and have yet to use the enire firebox.
Feel free to ask any questions and I will do my best to help you out. Although I prefer the Primo you really can't go wrong with either. Good luck.
Oh, and you can get the primo at a good discount if you wait and talk to the right person here.

That was my next question. Are they about the same in price?

I've got an egg and love it. Very well made, lots of accessories available. Buddy of mine has a Primo and it seems to be of similar quality.

Both are awesome. Pretty much the same thing. I have an egg, and I like it better because there are more accessories from third party fabricators, and there's a huge ownership community. You can pretty much google anything and add green egg onto the end of it and get a great recipe form a forum somewhere. Check out ceramic grill store and look at all the accessories they have.

Food and drink board would give you good answers. Or maybe the outdoor board

Primo XL is a great Kamado. Plus the XL is oval, larger cooking surface…can cook in direct/direct at the same time.
I would even say my Kamado Joe is cheaper in price and better made Kamado then the BGE.
If you want answers, go to Kamado Guru website LINK read up on some threads. By far, the Primo gets the most buzz.

Can't do this on an egg...

Everything Janky said.
I have the deflectors for my Primo XL. Don't use them.
