re: QB Play In 2014 - Better or Worse Than 2011?

2014 clearly have a better teacher, but they are young and don't have the experience of 2011.
2014 better have more talent than 2011 or we are in trouble for awhile. Hopefully 2014 doesn't cost us a game or two early and improve by midseason.
If one or both look good early, this could be a special year.

I agree, but that 2011 offense didn't exactly jump out of the gates if you remember the Oregon and Miss. St. games.

JLee played almost spotless ball until the gump game
Just go back and watch the games that year. Lee was uncomfortable in the pocket and had this little jump-throw that he'd pull out whenever he wasn't throwing off his back foot. There was a point against Oregon where it looked like he might not complete a forward pass. Had under an 8 yard avg/attempt vs. Miss. St. Basically a completed pass down-field was a prayer answered.
I'm just hanging my hat on Cam and the fact that both our QBs now are bigger recruits than JJ/Lee.

2011 was pretty good until Arkansas.
In fact, each of the last three regular season games were better offensively than any of the other games in 2011. Jefferson started those last three games.

People really sleep on how well Jefferson played that year. Outside of the Championship games, the guy was ridiculously efficient:
In his first 8 games that year:
64.29% completion
654 yards
9.34 yards/attempt
5 TDs
1 INT
163.48 Passer Rating
That's right. Lee was the "most efficient passer"* in the SEC prior to the championship games, except that Jefferson was even more efficient than Lee. Lee was called the "most efficient passer"* in the SEC prior to the championship games because Lee had enough starts to qualify, and Jefferson did not.

Less experience at the skilz but huge upswing in play-callers with a slightly better OL. This spells run, run, and run some more with timely play-actions and roll-out passes. Coupled with the above, I believe the QB's can be more effective overall, as both QB's appear to be effective runners as well.

Jarrett Lee led the SEC in efficiency
After JL's 9 starts, LSU ranked 2nd in the SEC in passing eff. After the next 5 games, including 2 games vs. top 5 D's nationally, LSU ranked 2nd in the SEC in passing eff.

Why the need to make his play as awful as JJs
After JL's 9 starts, LSU was scoring 35.89 points a game and averaging 355.33 yds of offense a game. For the season and after finishing the yr playing 2 of the top D's in the nation, the LSU O ended up with a 35.71 scoring average and 355.07 total O average for the yr.
Why some feel the need to pretend like the LSU O shined under one QB and sucked under another, is really odd, but predictable, to me.

I think QB is one of the positions where experience is extremely valuable.
LSU threw five interceptions for all of 2011. Lee threw three interceptions, and Jefferson threw only two.
I would expect more than five interceptions for 2014.

Not trying to rehash the JJ-JL argument. In 2011 special teams and defense either scored on set the offense up with beyond great field position, which accounts for many of the PPG numbers.
On the flip side, if your offense has 20 and 40 yard TD drives on the regular, it hurts their YPG average.

Worse early Better late Lee was extremely efficient until the GOTC. After that the QB play deteriorated noticeably. This year the QBs will take their lumps early but improve as the season goes.
No, I think better period. We only scored more than one TD from the QB position a game, twice the first 5 games of 2011. We only went over 180 passing yards twice the first 5 games
I really believe after the Wisky teaser, we will open it up more. If we don't, we lose the best chance to test the QBs and WRs before the big games.

He was definitely efficient, but could even be actually good this year.
Anyone who wanted to start or even play JL in the Championship needs to remember i threw 1 TD and 7 picks in 4 games against Alabama.

True, but you have to give credit to Lee for that 13-1 TD to INT ratio he put up the first 8 games.
Hopefully, just like then these young QB's won't be asked to win games by themselves, unless of course one or the other steps up and shows that capability.

quote:Worse. I don't think we have the disasters that SECCG and NCG were but overall the performance may be lacking. Last year's bowl game was particularly shaky and from what little I have seen of Harris (admittedly from video clips here and there) his accuracy isn't something that belongs in a D-1 game yet.
QB Play In 2014 - Better or Worse Than 2011?
I am hopeful that it can be managed with excellent running and defense like the Oregon game in 2011 when Lee was making an emergency start on short notice.

The QB play for the first 8 games was very good in 2011. Very efficient TD/Int ratio and overall good stats.
I think by the end of this year, we are going to regret not holding onto the QB's we lost last year.

This 2 QB system drives me crazy, and we can't listen to anything Les says. He states that this year is different because the issue is just that neither QB has separated themselves from the other.....but isn't always the case? I mean, if one QB was clearly better, wouldn't that one play?

But not only was it more efficient the last three games, it was far more productive. It's like the QB was driving a Ferrari instead of a Honda.

Jarrett Lee led the SEC in efficiency and had the longest streak for a LSU qb without a pick. Why the need to make his play as awful as JJs play during that season is really odd to me.
Oregon 10-22 (45.5%) 98 yards 1 TD
Kentucky 8-21 (38.1%) 169 yards 1 TD
Bama 3-7 (42.9%) 24 yards 2 ints
Don't get me wrong, he game managed like a SOB, but he had his bad games too. JJ had one against Bama, and one against UGA. They were also the #1 ranked and #3 ranked defenses in the country. The whole team as a whole, not just Jefferson, totaled like 30 yards the first have against UGA. The team outside of JJ against Bama in the NCG had 13 carries for 24 yards.
Let's compare JJ and Lee with similar games and same game stats.
Lee.........................................................................JJ
Kentucky - 8/21 (38.1%) 169 yards 1 TD....................4 rush 29 yards 1 TD
Florida - 7/10 (70%) 154 yards 1 TD....................3/4 (75%) 61 yards 1 TD
Tennessee - 13/17 (76.5%) 138 yards 3 TD....................1/3 (33.3%) 8 yards///14 rush 73 yards 1 TD
Auburn - 14/20 (70%) 165 yards 2 TDs....................2/3 (66.7%) 54 yards 1 TD
Bama - 3/7 (42.9%) 24 yards 2 ints....................6/10 (60%) 67 yards///11 rush 43 yards
#3Oregon -10-22 (45.5%) 98 yards 1 TD....................#3Arkansas - 18/29 (62.1%) 208 yards 1 TD 1 int///7 rush 53 yards 1 TD
Northwestern St - 9/10 (90%) 133 yards 1 TD....................Western Ky - 8/14 (57.1%) 168 yards 1 TD///5 rush 20 yards
MSU - 21/27 (77.8%) 213 yards 1 TD 1 int....................Ole Miss - 7/7 (100%) 88 yards 1 TD///6 rushes 26 yards.
So as you can see, they are pretty comparable.

Did you watch the postseason in 2011 by any chance? It seems like you didn't.

Yep.
Did you watch Oregon, Kent., and 1st Bama game?
Look, JL managed the season till Bama pretty well. JJ managed the season pretty well till the 2nd Bama game. We didn't win any games just cause of our QB play and we didn't lose any games just cause of our QB play.
My only comment was in reference to this thought process some continue to push on us that one QB shined during in 2011 and one sucked. For the games each QBed in 2011 on the whole, that thought process is not a valid one. imo
As to the point of this thread, who knows what our QB play holds for us. That said, I think the play as QB will be better. We never had a QB win a game for us in 2011, but Jennings has already won a game for us going into this season.

2013 way better than 2011, hopefully the QB play will be better this year than 2011, I couldn't imagine Jennings or Harris being as crappy as JJ
