Employers to New Grads: We Don't Care About Your Grades, Classes, or College

When I was 17, if you asked me how I planned on getting a job in the future, I think I would have said: Get into the right college. When I was 18, if you asked me the same question, I would have said: Get into the right classes. When I was 19: Get good grades.
But when employers recently named the most important elements in hiring a recent graduate, college reputation, GPA, and courses finished at the bottom of the list. At the top, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, were experiences outside of academics: Internships, jobs, volunteering, and extracurriculars.

Well, if you graduated with a sweet 2.2, that GPA is going to be glaringly important to an interviewer, regardless of what they say in a survey.

Most internships require non shitty grades

But in some fields, the internships are highly competitive, GPA plays a big role in getting them, and getting them means having relevant experience right out of college.
EDIT: Beat me to it.

Depends a lot on the job and company. Major oil companies wont even accept your resume unless you meet the gpa requirement, this is for new grads.

I've never had a potential employer ask me for my GPA.

Let me guess you either a) didn't go to or finish college, b) made shitty grades or c) a & b

Gotta combat all the bullshite Adderall aided grades somehow.

GPA doesn't matter for plant operators

This is partly why I got out of engineering -- admittedly, I couldn't cut it. I was working full time, and just couldn't handle the workload. My grades were in the 2.0-2.5 range each semester, totally undesirable as a job applicant.

Yes, they do.

You know what? I'll let this one slide.

or College
This varies on a scale ranging from "Sure, whatever" to outright depending on the situation.

Frick that! I'm just being really picky right now, but I feel like I should have at least heard back from at least one company.

Posted on 8/21/14 at 12:26 am to biglego

Posted on 8/21/14 at 12:28 am to StickyFingaz
Assuming you are trying to find a job at a plant I hear most of these companies require a hair test that can be traced back 6 months.
