While I'd like to agree with you, the situation changes when the officers are power hungry morons not fit for most other professions. That isn't most cops, FWIW, but it does fairly describe some.

TBH, the county sheriff where I live is fine. They actually give a damn about professionalism. Some of the city cops are just terrible

That's the problem. We are all treated like "perps" rather than citizens.

When and how did this happen?

Absolutely not true at all.

You always respect people. But we are all adults. Cops are peers. They aren't mommy and daddy.

They should be respected as a means of being polite just like you'd show respect to any stranger you meet.

A lot of people grew up respectful but disrespect police officers because they over-step their authority.

Plus, a lot of them are stupid. For example, in many areas, all you need is a high school degree to be a cop. I absolutely understand people being frustrated with a loud moron with a gun bossing people around.

Having said that, there are a lot of good cops out there. But as for the disrespect... I get it. A lot of them treat good citizens like common criminals.

Sound advice

Yep. As I said on another thread, the best way for a community to hurt a bad cop is to start flooding the police department with complaints against him.

Yep, when they came in my cabin under false pretense (illegally) I didn't push back. Did get my dog out of the cabin though.

I probably shouldn't be so harsh towards cops...

After I got in shape and cut my hair, I did get out of two tickets a few years down the road by simply being polite. LOL

One time I was speeding (20MPH over) on a two-lane highway in the middle of nowhere. I passed a cop coming the other direction. Didn't see him till it was too late as he was coming over a hill towards me.

He hit the lights immediately, but being that we were in the middle of nowhere, he was going to have to go a ways before he could turn and pursue me.

I thought to myself "hmmm there are a few roads I could turn down before he is able to turn around and he may never find me, but if he does, I'll be in bigger trouble".

What did I do? I found a wide shoulder a mile up the road, pulled over, and waited for him.

About three minutes later I can see him coming over the hill in my rearview.

He got out of the car laughing. He couldn't believe I pulled over like that.

"All my years of being on the force, I've never seen this. Hell, I thought I was going to lose you. I didn't get to turn around for almost two miles. You could have gotten away. I just want to know your name so I can tell you thank you for being accountable, then go home. I'm not even going to run your license. If you have any warrants, today is your lucky day".

So, not all of them are frickers.

I hate police with a passion...

This sounds like sound advice to me.

In fact, the times I was pulled over and harassed endlessly by those frickers, I did not once bait them. I knew better.

Once I was illegally searched while he called me a drughead (nothing was found) and sexually harassed my hot girlfriend on the side of the road for almost 20 minutes.

I didn't retaliate.

Humiliated? Yes

Still in one piece? Yes

I hope you filed a complaint. That's what I've done in the past.

thats the problem. because things can turn on the cop quickly, he has to enter the encounter defensive, or at least overly cautious. I'm sure they have seen countless training films where a seemingly innocuous situation turned quickly on the officer

Yep. If you aren't breaking the law, a cop has no reason to boss you around and treat you like scum.

Most cops I know love knowing that people are intimidated by them. And that's a big reason why many of them become cops. It's all a power trip.

When thugs are in the process of kicking your door in, and you call 911...who do you want showing up with a gun.....Barack Obama...or some badass with an attitude!

Police are there to do what our sorry-assed Free Press is supposed to do...CRITIQUE/be critical of those we charge them to. For the Press...it's politicians with power; for the Police...it's potential lawless individuals and groups.

Anybody with power is problematic...but it's either take care of business ourselves - and that with an increasing incivility/ruthlessness in large segments of the populous - or hire professional hardasses to do it for us. I'll take the latter. If they get too far out of line...the weak links will go rogue, follow them home, and put the fear of God in the whole bunch.

I love the Law. At least or until it is corrupted to serve anti-Constitutional ends. Hell...our Tigers couldn't play a game without the whole place coming unglued, without em'.

And then add in those cops that hide behind bushes in hopes of "catching" you going over the speed limit so they can treat you like a hardened criminal. It's a problem.

What "encounter?"

Stop hiding in the bushes. Stop pushing your weight around like an overlord and there won't be any "encounter."

Community members deserve courtesy, respect and professionalism from their officers. Every person stopped by a cop should feel safe instead of feeling that their wellbeing is in jeopardy. Shouldn’t the community members extend the same courtesy to their officers and project that the officer’s safety is not threatened by their actions?

Nope.

I didn't want to see that idiot again. It was a local force in the town I lived in. I knew someone who knew of the cop. The cop was a known insufferable douchebag. The fact that I was a long-haired-hippy-looking kid in his late teens with a hot girlfriend pissed him off.

You can't deal logically with people that arrogant and ignorant. I was wise in my young age not to file a complaint.
