Fact. The first versions of this airframe had a crosshairs PAINTED on the pilots window. He just put the plane in a circular bank until the crosshairs was on the target and they went to pound town.

Now there are a handful of computer operators in the back and a gazillion computers running things.

The ones they used in Vietnam were called "spooky" or "puff the magic dragon". They were old WWII era Douglas C-47's (the same planes that dropped the paratroopers in Normandy during D-Day) that had been modified as gunships.

GT, I've always wondered if the bad guys can't hear the C-130 flying overhead

probably not. They have a bunch of C-130s at Maxwell AFB near my house and they are flying all the time. You dont ever really hear them much at all; nothing like a jet.

you can usually see the C-130 lights in the night sky though. not sure if they use those during real sorties.

Service ceiling is 30k ft and guns effective around 15k, so maybe more like 15-20k

And you see them fly much lower than that

The new AC-130W which was in use in RC(E) when I was there doesn't even have a 105 anymore. That's all cool stuff but pointless in reality. In fact unless the 130 is already on target 9 times out of 10 the JTAC is calling in the AWT for CAS in a JAAT with A-10s. That was my experience in Mountain warfare in RC(E).

Excuse me, sir. Seeing as how the VP is such a VIP, shouldn't we keep the PC on the QT? 'Cause if it leaks to the VC he could end up MIA, and then we'd all be put on KP.

130's were also used in Vietnam...

My Dad flew Forward Air Control in Vietnam. He was in a single-engine Cessna flying at tree top level with smoke bombs to mark the targets. Of course, he was an easy target for Charlie as well. He got several medals, made it home alive and is still with us.

Can't see them doing successful strafing at 20k... way too high...

I estimate from videos they're about 1,500 feet.

Yeah, but you'd be able to hear the plane's engines at 1500 feet. I never heard or saw the thing.

That far within small arms range? No way in hell. Even at the range, they train at operational altitude.

You will never, ever get a gunship (AC H, AC U or AC W) to 30k ft.

Also, they fight unpressurized, so they have to suck the hose if they're over 12.5k.
