Greatest Programs of All-Time, according to the AP Poll - since 1936
Florida State seems a bit low. Otherwise great list
Prior to late70s they were awful

One thing to remember...this list is a representation of voter love and most times finishing in the Top 5...and while not national titles...it's a Top heavy list. Who finished Top 5 most times.
When we did this in 2000, Notre Dame was on top of the world by a huge margin.
According to the scoring system, consistent production isn't necessarily rewarded. For example, if a team finished 17th for four straight years, it would get a total of 36 points (No. 17 gets 9 points). A team that finished the beginning of the decade No. 2 (24 points) and the end of the decade ranked tenth (16 points), but wasn't ranked any year in between, would get a total 40 points.
I think Nebraska is so high is because they consistently finished in the Top 5 from the 1970's and 1980's - even though they had an awful bowl record in the 80's 2-8-1 - getting exposed in every big game...before Osborne's big leap in the 90's.
That list isn't about national titles per se...but how highly ranked teams were since 1936. And Michigan and Ohio State were consistent - Top 10 - most loved by the voters.
The 90's kill USC as being behind Nebraska.

Surprised LSU was that high.
So am I. 11th all time is solid.
The 21st century has been berry, berry good to LSU.

The Oklahoma teams under Wilkinson played some weak arse competition even for back then.

I doubt more than 10% of the country would give this distinction to Oklahoma.... the other 40% would probably say Notre Dame or USC

Over thirty years without a new years day bowl win...

If you don't believe me, look at the 1955 and 1956 Oklahoma teams that set the record with 47 consecutive wins.
They played 1 top ten team during that stretch. And that was in a bowl game, which didn't actually count for the polls.
Essentially, they didn't play a single top ten team. Not one.

Their sos was #50 and #65 in both of those years.

Exactly. They beat up on sub-standard competition. Of course this was a product of the times and the schedule put in front of them.
The point is that it makes it very difficult to ascertain, in retrospect, just how good those OU teams were. My guess is they were not nearly as good as their record suggests. They played in what was a backwater conference at the time and dominated. They are the Boise State of the 1950s.
