I really don't know what actually happened on the track; nobody really does. I do know this: Within 4 hours of killing a man Tony Stewart said it was his intention to race the next day. His Team said "business as usual". The next morning he said he would not race. I think that is because by that time he had a crisis team in place and they told him that racing would be a PR nightmare that he would not recover from.

When I got that text from ESPN that he was gonna race Sunday, I thought it was just absurd. I thought it was no question from a PR standpoint that he wasn't gonna race. I was thinking NASCAR was gonna have to stop him from racing. That would have been a nightmare for NASCAR.

He doesn't want to race. He is grieving. Kevin Ward died. Tony Stewart contributed to his death. Smoke made the final decision. The sponsors are supporting smoke in his decisions. He if chose to race they would support.

I doubt that Tony gives two fricks that someone jumped in front of his sprint car and killed himself. More than likely his sponsors don't want to be represented by someone that half of America is stupid enough to believe mowed over a competitor in cold blood.

Dan Patrick was saying that TS's people said that morning, "business as usual" and DP was like WTF. He was questioning how TS's people could be that tone deaf to what is going on that morning.

I dont think it was meant disrespectfully. I think at that point he just should have said no comment and gathered his thoughts. He had to be in shock.

One thing if he had seriously injured him, but the moment he passed away, it went to a different level.

No surprise at all, I would imagine he will take a lot of time off. Rest of 2014 at least. His PR would suffer dramatically if he didn't, and his sponsors are hanging on by a thread.

A terrible thing all around, and safety needs to really be not just encouraged but enforced in Nascar.

Yeah, I think when you look at NASCAR. The one thing they do well is safety. It's crazy how tough of hit those guys can take in the cars/walls they have out there now. They take some pretty big slams, and usually walk away fine.

I wouldn't want to race either if I had just murdered someone.

By the way, why does the press keep posting a depressed looking tony for every article? This would be better...

Smoke really should have left
the dirt track circuit after his injury.

I don't know if he hit that
kid on purpose or not.

But, as an elite Sprint cup driver,
WTF is he doing racing start up's
and hobbyist on damn dirt tracks?

Hope it is proven to be a complete accident
but, wow he's an idiot.

It's like a MLB player coming in to a local softball league.
What was he trying to prove?

This is turning into OJ...

And the NASCAR fans and posters are the black/mexican/mixed jury/....

OJ was a court of law...but bolstered by a more innocent time.

He's safe, co.

Doubt he races anymore this year
So if he would have won a race prior to this accident, do you still think your above statement is correct?

My personal opinion is that no sponsors will be lost.
I don't think this will be the case. Time will tell though

And I've stayed out of this whole mess until today... (which is probably best)

I wouldn't ban you. We can have a discussion and you can have a difference of opinion.

BTW rummstain is ignorant when it comes to racing. I would expect nothing less from someone whose favorite sport is figure skating.

foxmoulder,

You laugh about what I said about contributing to Ward's death. How else would you describe it? Ward also contributed to his death.

Robin Pemberton on ESPN.

ETA: No rule changes really, just writing an unwritten rule.

Tony is a racing nut. I don’t think I have never seen someone who loves it as much as he does. When he goes on vacation, he's racing. He would probably race emu’s if they would give him a chance. I would almost bet money someone is not letting (advising) him not to race and I can promise you its eating his azz up.
I don’t think he did this on purpose, I would like to believe that no one would. I do believe that it is a horable accident due to a combination of bad judgment from all involved.

Sprint car racing is his hobby. The small tracks love him to come and race.

He is the not the only NASCAR driver that races at smaller tracks.

Same reason why NBA players like Kevin Durant play pickup basketball games at local playgrounds.
