You should do what my grandfather made me do numerous times. Move a pile of dirt with a shovel 5 feet. It so monotonous and awful

My dad "caught" me drinking when I was in high school. Well, he didn't actually see me do it but he could tell I had been drinking because I showed up "not feeling well" the next morning after a night out with the friends. He never said a word about alcohol or that I was in trouble or anything like that. He just planned a helacious Saturday full of work that needed to be done and it was hell on earth trying to do it with a hangover. Looking back that was the best punishment possible. It wasn't hypocritical and it taught me that if you are going to drink, you still have to be a responsible man and run your house unlike most lazy arse drunks.

Don't be so overbearing that he starts hiding it

why would you LOSE it? Did you not know this day was coming, talk to him about his decision, talk to him about why it is ok for responsible drinking for adults versus children, let him know the differences. You dont have to lose it, or discipline. I am the parent of a teen, you will be amazingly suprised at their ability to understand if you just communicate why you dont want them engaging in certain behaviors.
You don't think he has already spoken to him? I am sure he lost it because he has spoken to him many times and his kid went off and did this. Its good to freak out, without any violence, and then once things calm down you have ANOTHER serious talk. I figured I would share since you seem to like giving parenting advice!

Instead of being a nazi about my kid not drinking, I'd rather spend that energy in ensuring he does it responsibly and without driving drunk.
I'd rather my hypothetical kids drink at my place under my supervision (maybe not 15 year olds but 16 for sure) and be able to make sure they don't do anything too stupid, than to make him fearful enough to lie about what he's doing and going.

Lol...yea. i went to school with a very prominent doctors child. He came home one night to find a line of young brothers in his back yard waiting to climb up to his daughters bedroom to get his turn.
Thats not funny to joke about

Sad thing is it's true. 10 guys in your back yard waiting to frick your 8th grade daughter.
I would have shot them all.

I can still remember the first time my father caught me he didn't say anything. He just basically told me to carry rock & firewood from point A to B for about 12 hours.

Take it for what it's worth, but those friends of mine who's parents let them have us over and partied on the weekends in HS turned out to be the least drinking or drug offenders of all. The worst were those who came from dictator parents. I'll never forget this one girl who's mom was on the board of MADD when it first started, and she was one wild arse for a really long time after her teenage years. Same for preachers kids and others, especially when they left for college. They led the pack into unabashed revelry.

How exactly did you catch him drinking? Did you come home and find him drinking one of your beers or did he come home hammered one night?

i don't just sit in my backyard and drink by myself. If i go to a party and i didn't drive there i will drink, after i cut the grass i will have 1-2 beers, but that is it.

Well based on your own alcoholism and drug addiction I'm sure your words and anger will be well received.
Posted on 8/12/14 at 10:38 pm to Charlie Arglist
Maybe if you taught him how to drink alcohol responsibly and in moderation he would be okay.

I love reading these threads. If the OT collectively raised a kid, that would be the most fricked up human on earth.

We must do this....for science.

emphasize the importance of NEVER EVER driving after drinking, but otherwise tell em not to get caught.
That's what my Dad did anyway.

At least he's not taking methadone or heroin like his old man.
