I will be in southern Virginia this month and am wondering if I should take a detour to see Appomattox.
Has anyone been? Is it worth it? Any recommendations?

Sure assuming you're not bored with history. If you're like me and you find it intriguing to be where major events happened, even if it isn't your favorite subject, it's worthwhile.

I definitely am intrigued. I have been wanting to start checking out Civil War sites. I guess I sort of answered my own question.
Guess I just wasn't sure if Appomattox was a good place to start.

Yeah, I've been. Not much there but if you are in to that stuff it's cool.
Not sure if you are driving all around that area, but Fredricksburg, VA is where Stonewall died and Lexington, VA is where Lee is buried. Both places were interesting to me

a cool tour would be to go to all of the major sites of the Civil War in the order in which they happened.
but im sure Appomattox will be cool, well maintained historical site. worth the opportunity in my opinion.

Yeah this would be ideal for me, but the logistics would be difficult. It would be cool to go on the day of the year each event occurred so you can experience the same seasonal weather.

Jackson was wounded at Chacellorsville and died in Guinea Station (not far from the battlefield) 8 days later. Like Lee, he's also buried in Lexington.

It's interesting to go there but there really isn't much there

FYI. These two places are not close to each other.

About 2 hours away. And I didn't know how long he was going to be in Virginia. Also just giving him some other options on interesting sites to see. I was much more impressed with Lee's tomb than Appomattox.

I've never been, but it's something to check off your US history to-do list.
I had never been to Gettysburg before this year. I went in April, and my only regret was that I could only be there for one day.

Interesting. I could possibly swing by Lexington later in my trip. I'm gonna look into Lee's tomb.

Well, he can start with Appomattox and go in reverse.

You gotta go to Chancellorsville to see where they buried Stonewall's arm. And pamplin park the site of the battle of Petersburg was the best battlefield that I have probably been to, they have a real nice setup. Or they did when I was in the 4th grade at least haven't been back.

Richmond has a ton of cool Civil War shite all within 5 or so miles of each other if you come along that way.
