Treat him like any other employee. He obviously didn't tell you so he isn't going to tell a client.

This is a Louisiana company if that matters.

Work -At-Will state.

Can fire for any reason (not federally protected) and not modified by employment contract.

Thus, "I don't like your shoes. You are fired". No recourse. Homosex is not a protected class (yet)

Now, why assume this is going to be a problem. Who gives a shite as a fellow worker or a client? Seems like a worry for nothing

How about just treat him as any other employee. Someone's sexuality is no one's business at work. If he has performance issues document and terminate.

Is it better to let him know on the first day that it was known but hired him anyway. That way he can't claim he was fired after people found out.
Yeah, that will show real well in front of a jury when you say you hired him "anyway".

BTW, he could have a solid "hostile environment" claim if he ever finds this thread and can tie it to you.

Just by the way your office is brainstorming and planning over something as trivial as having a gay coworker tells me this will turn out badly somehow

You should probably just treat him the same way you'd treat any new colleague?

It is not illegal to fire an employee in Louisiana because they're gay. So you're OK there.

Unless you are the company and the only employee, and you are not gay; you can't possibly know that.

You sure do like to bad mouth your office a lot.

The company I work for has lots of money, yet we always have trouble paying our bills. This is all because the person that is supposed to pay our bills is lazy, totally unorganized and always has an excuse.

I have decided that I am not going to sign it. They really don't want to fire me and I am willing to take it that far. I guess I will find out if they are willing to. On a positive note though, I have found out there are several others that are not signing and I THINK they will have to back off. The people they would have to fire alone could start a competing firm very quickly. I just have to make sure they don't divide and conquer the hold outs.

I'd be worried about your job at that engineering firm, boss.

My company is hiring its first gay employee, but he doesn't start for a few more weeks. At this point we know, but he doesn't know that we know.

Careful I understand its an airborne disease if you breath in the Gay's air.
