Clinton speech from 9/10/2001 - I could have gotten OBL but didn't

Bill Clinton gave a speech the day before 9/11 in Australia telling an audience that he could have taken out Osama Bin Laden but didn't because it would have meant taking out a village of 300 people in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
This audio was recorded at the time but never released until this week, when the former head of the Australian Labour Party remembered it and released his copy of it.
It's very interesting that this is just surfacing now, especially considering the huge legal battle that the Clintons put up against the makers of The Path To 9/11 TV movie, to the point where the film was only shown once on TV and never given a video release.

Hindsight's always 20/20. At the time, I understand his reasoning for not sacrificing 300 people for Bin Laden.
I really don't have a ton to complain about when it comes to Bill as the President. and I loved Gdub.

quote:I agree with him.
“I nearly got him. And I could have killed him, but I would have to destroy a little town called Kandahar in Afghanistan and kill 300 innocent women and children, and then I would have been no better than him. And so I didn’t do it.”

I dont hate bill but 300 people would have been better than losing thousands of americans on 9/11 and the war on terror.
eta: and unless we were planning to just level the town completely I'm not sure it would have been 300 people. probably more like 20 or so.

I'm not blaming him for passing on the attempt.
However, I am finding it very curious that this speech got buried for 13 years only to be unearthed now considering all the legal battles the Clintons have put up over 9/11 and his inability to stop it.

Surely he had other opportunities. Or was OBL always surrounded by 300 people in Kandahar?

Here in America, we are supposed to have principles. Sometimes, that makes it harder and could be more risky. When you have principles, the ends do not justify the means.

I tend to agree with you, but at the same time, it is pretty close to universally agreed that dropping the A-bombs was the right move.
Using that position that, I would have rather him taken him out. Obviously, hindsight is 20/20

I just highly doubt 300 people would have died with OBL. We weren't going to wipe a town off the map when we have precision strikes. A handful of people probably die that are somewhat innocent. Does it suck? sure but id trade some people of another country for american lives and the shite show we have been in since 9/11. Im not blaming bill for 9/11 because it is hindsight but id probably pulled the trigger. It is a tough decision but 300 people is a whole lot less than those that were killed directly and indirectly by obl.

Think of it in terms of our privacy at home. Most people here are against government intrusions on privacy... like listening in on our conversations.
What if the government was given free-reign to listen in? Sure, they may catch more criminals and terrorists or whoever, but we are supposed to have principles. We will take our chances because we value freedom and privacy. They will have to find another way, and we will take the risk.
Same thing in regards to taking out Bin Laden at the expense of hundreds of people. Sure, you will kill Bin Laden, but as Americans, we are supposed to have principles and if that makes our lives a little less safe, then so be it.

They didn't hit the camp because there was a slide near it. They did not want to kill children. They had a rough idea about how many people were there but weren't sure. Now those children are all grown up doing the will of those who raised them. Good Call Bill

me either and no need to really, he unplugged our intelligence divisions to help cover his indiscretions leading to the massive failure to prevent 9/11, that in itself is enough.
then there's the traitors act of selling our latest missile guidance technology to the Chinese for campaign donations.
he killed thousands of serbs trying to protect themselves from muslim incursion and had his media minions falsely label it as a "humanitarian act"..
Clinton is a rotten pos, and you don't even need add any more of his illicit behavior to understand why.

Bill Clinton has never told the truth in his life. Why would anyone believe him now?
Posted on 7/31/14 at 5:19 pm to teke184
Think about the context of the speech Clinton was delivering. Do you believe he was expressing regret, or self-congratulations for his restraint? All I can do is guess, but it is strange that almost 13 years have gone by and this is the first mention of the speech. How many times has he addressed this issue since?
In 2001 Bill Clinton claims he could have gotten bin Laden, but in 2008 FactCheck.org said he couldn't. LINK One of them is wrong. I wonder which?

9/11 would've still happened.
