the 14 club rule is the most overlooked rule that I seem to encounter
its mostly older guys I play with, but those guys all seem to have 2 drivers, about 5 hybrids, and 4 different wedges
many of the clubs, they don't ever consider hitting, but they feel like they have to carry them

Just play by the rules of golf and then you won't have to worry about it.

I think the only rule we break is that we play 2 off the 1st tee. Other than that, it's pretty much by the book. Play it as it lies, 14 clubs, stroke & distance for OB, etc.

I thought you could carry as many clubs as you wanted, but only use 14.
If your looking for an interesting rule/game; allow as many mulligans as a player wants, but for every mulligan used the rest of the group can make the player rehit a god shot. So if a member of the group rolls in a 30 footer for birdie, and he has used a mulligan you get to make him hit the putt again.

everyone I see that says they play by the book still takes gimmes
if I'm playing in a money game, and there are gimme's, i'm taking them

We don't always play by the rules if there's nothing kn the line. But if you're going to report a score it should be by the book IMO

I like to report every score so I keep it as close to the book as possible
I make my own determination based on course condition if I should play it down, bump it, or LCP

This. We play strict rules and never improve our lie. But if I don't use a club for a year I take it out of my bag. I'm down to seven ... Driver, 3 wood, hybrid, 6 iron, 8 iron, 9 iron, putter.
When I turn 70 I hope to get it down to 4 clubs.
