2011 defense had playmakers everywhere
Posted on 7/27/14 at 11:19 am to lsuman25
Before that lost to Florida in 2003, I thought we had a good defense, but not great. After that lost, something snapped... And proceeded to become the best defense in the BCS era at the time. The growth that defense went through was phenomenal. The passion was unmatched by even the 2011 team.
2011 was great immediately out of the gate. The playmakers, the talent, and the sheer able to take the ball and make great offenses (ducks) quit... Just wow. The depth was underrated. We rotated our defensive front so much and still got the same results throughout the game.
Watching our defense in 2003 was like watching a great pitcher take control and pitch a complete game. Watching 2011 defense was like watching Nolan Ryan throw another no hitter... Both great defenses, but one might of slightly over achieved... 2011 did not.

Also in 03 we were clearly schematically ahead of college football and running an NFL defense that opposing teams simply hadn't seen and weren't prepared for.
It was like Florida's O in the 90's... sure the play calls were great, but it also helps when every opposing team is built to stop the power-run. We were making calls at the line to adjust to opposing offenses when teams didn't know you could even do that.
Not sure how that compares to '11, but the offenses just played into our hands back then. My favorite Saban play was the all-out FS blitz where LaRon would go un-touched to the QB.
Maybe the coaching stood out even more following the Lou Tepper era, but once Saban got the athletes, that defense became impossible to score against, which was always the strongest argument of why we would've beaten USC that year. Noone could score against us.

Really? That's a stretch. we got dominated defensively by ron zook.

'11 was the best LSU defense I've ever seen. They had almost no weaknesses and were as aggressive a defense as college football has ever seen. They changed every game they played in. 2003 was great too, one of the nastiest d-line and cornerback tandems ever. They played mean and would shut you down. But '11 could simply win a game for you.

2003 was long enough ago that people forget just how good they are. Go watch some replays. It's disgusting.
2011 was great but teams were able to do things they wanted against them at times.

Saban coached in 2003 so, clearly, that was the far superior defense to 2011. Anyone Ranter should know this.

Or they were simply better.

Based on BCSCG, I have to go with 2003.
if your defense is on the field 75% of the game, theyre going to give up some points. the defense had NO help that game.

I would say the '03 D was like the Steele curtain not flashy but unbelievably tough. Where as the '11 D was like the Ravens D when T. Sizzle was rushing the qb and Ed Reed was roaming the secondary waiting to make a game changing play. I like the flash so I'll go with 2011.

Were the offenses LSU played against better in '03 or '11? That will say a lot about the ppg allowed.
03 defense completely dominated two high powered offenses: UGA and OU. OU had a heisman QB and beat aggy 77-0 and Texas 65-13 that year.

yeah I'm kinda feeling that way too. no knock on 2011, but I'm seeing stuff about them having better playmakers and being a turnover machine as though things like that weren't true about 03. a few notes on that.
- 03 produced 33 turnovers (21 int) and 44 sacks; 2011 had 30 TOs (18 int) and 39 sacks
- Lav should've been Natl DPOY, he had a ridiculous yr and set the standard for what we expect from our star DTs
- Webster had as good a season by a cover CB as I've seen at LSU. 03 was his second straight season with 7 picks, and he always seemed to make plays in big games/ big moments
- T Daniels and Webster were 1-2 nationally in PBUs. looking at recent stats, I wonder if they're not calculated differently now. but those 2 did seem to bat down or pick damn near everything in their vicinity.
- Laron, Alexander, Hunt and Williams made their fair share of plays too. not to mention those 300ish pound DEs that we trotted out.
also, to the point about 03 having a better offense, they were more competent in the passing game (I know, understatement). but '03 turned the ball over way more than '11 (28 for '03 to 10 for '11), especially against better teams, and put the D in some binds.
both were among the best I've ever seen. so as I said earlier, flip a coin.

Probably correct. Look at the huge disparity in hurries, 171-37. There is no way that can be right, even though we played several teams in 2011 that liked to get rid of the ball quickly.

2011 outperformed every offense it faced - even in the BCSCG. Halfway through the fourth quarter, when defeat was assured, they quit. Until then they had gone eight quarters without allowing the national champions into the end zone! On top of that they were a turnover machine. They did all of this with unbelievably crappy offense. All we had was a running game, but we had a very mediocre oline. That running game was actually powered by our defense which constantly got the ball back until the other team quit. 2011 is the best LSU defense I've ever seen, and I've been watching for half a century.
Great post
As others have said, the great offenses we faced in 2011 were much more dynamic than the vast majority of those we faced in 2003, although shutting down Oklahoma's record setting O was amazing.
I think that, plus the unprecedented ability not not only take the ball away, but actually put points on the board, gives 2011 the nod.
2003 seemed more physically brutal and silently imposing. A Tyson type D that just overpowered you.
2011 was the Ali. Blazingly fast and athletic assaulting from all angles. And would tell you about it before, during, and after.
to both of those amazing teams

West Virginia had 533 yards.
Alabama moved the ball at will between the 20s both games.
