re: Best car under 30k (1.5 hour commute each day)

I've really like my passat, I grabbed it on a whim after looking at more expensive cars for a couple months and not being able to convince myself of which to get.
I had always have gone Asian(Honda/Toyota/Acura), so I decided to test drive a volks for the first time just for the frick of it, and bought it right after.
well crafted vehicles

You have to define best. Since you're buying, what do you want the kid to have? What are your concerns? Is it just reliability? Is gas milage a big issue? Do you want it to be super fun on the commute? Are maintenance costs an issue?

Boy or girl? Single or married? Kids? Will this be their only car?

Ford Fusion
I test drove one of the 2014s last year, it was the top of the line one and was just over 30k, and I really enjoyed it. Great interior, electronics and a really good stereo. If I had a long commute I might have looked at it a little more.

That's good to know. I'm on my 4th set of rear pads, counting the factory installed set, with 117k miles. Was told they installed a redesigned set of pads this last time around. Here's hoping it makes a difference. The front brakes are on it's 2nd set counting the factory installed set.

Then I would suggest test driving the Ford Fusion Hybrid. It seemed bigger than Accords I have been in and like I said it was VERY nice and they get over 40mpg. Also, if she does end up having a kid it will be perfect for the first few years.

1.5hrs commute a day is a good bit. Go with a camry or accord and it'll run 100K+ miles without issue.

I'm a Volvo fan. You really don't have a need for AWD like we do in the Tundra of N. Arkansas here. But the 5cyl 2.5L Turbo is pretty consistent to get 32-34mpg. Volvo interiors are top notch and they hold good resale value until they hit 150k miles or more.

Why are you buying her a car? Early 20s and has a job. She can buy her own car.

That's a long way. Jetta TDI, or if you looking for a small SUV, a Mazda CX5

She doesn't want a camry since I have one and her sister has a carolla. Also doesn't want a Volvo since that is what I want next

Can you get a new one for under 30k? They are very nice cars and their seats are awesome! I still think a new Fusion is the best bang for your buck.

Do ford fusions have a good track record for running 100K+ miles?

I never said I was buying it. I am consulting. The OT thinks what it wants.
Eta: I am skeptical of ford also.

I wouldn't keep any European car after its warranty ended. Expensive as shite to fix
