He said he could never stop Spurrier during his heyday at Florida...Could anyone stop Fla. then except for maybe Fla. St.? King also said that Chavis is made to look better than he is due to the talent at LSU..LSU will always have at least top 15 talent, so I guess Chavis just lucked up, right?

Seems like Chavis has done ok beating Spurrier on the reg at S Carolina along with Auburn and stopping Manzel when no one else could. And we've been in the games with Bama.

Bill King seems like a nice guy and he's entitled to his opinion.

Well, Chavis didn't do all that great when the talent left Tennessee

But with the players for his system, I don't think there's a better DC in the country

I like Bill King. Used to listen to him on WLAC in Nashville (clear channel like WWL). But he's wrong on this.

And,Tennessee did a good job with Florida from 1998-2001.

How's the ole ball coach doing without the talent he had in Florida back in the day?

All of these guys have seen poor years on D when there is a talent deficit.

IMO, Chavis had one of his best years this year. That defense was depleted on the DL as bad as I've ever seen it. Multiple true Freshman seeing significant playing time, and they ended the season as a top 15 defense.

I don't disagree with his assessment.

Chavis' big knock towards the end at UT was not evolving to the spread and Urban Meyer. He was viewed at as a yesteryear coach unable to adapt along with Fat Phil.

I think Chavis has proven he has learned and evolved as a coach, which may or may not have been a problem while at UT, but some Tenn natives will never shake that impression.

Let's extrapolate this for a bit. It's probably good if he's just an "average DC". If Chavis is just an average DC, then that bodes very well for us long term. We can field elite defenses with average DCs.

(Note: I don't believe he's an average DC, just extrapolating)

Bill King's opinion is the same as Chavis'. He said last month on the radio that he has been fortunate in his career to coach extraordinarily talented young men. Makes everyone look a lot smarter.

If you look at total defense our rankings arent that impressive, except for 2011. I like Chavis though.

Chavis became DC at Tennessee in 1995. That year, they gave up 62 to Florida. However, it is notable that after 1995, Chavis never let Spurrier outscore his season average again while at Tennessee. That's right, Chavis held Spurrier below season averages from 1996-2001.

From 2005-2008, Chavis held Spurrier to below season averages 3 out of 4 times. The exception is 2008, and that is the year HC Phil Fulmer got canned along with everybody else.

Chavis and Spurrier have also faced off once since Chavis moved to LSU. In 2012, Chavis held Spurrier to 10 pts. below South Carolina's average in a win.

In summary, Chavis has held Spurrier below season averages 10 of 12 times.

Sorry for the novel. /tldr

So he gets no credit for getting that talent to his school and developing them into NFL players?

The job Chavis did last year was outstanding! He lost an NFL defense almost and still had a solid defense last year. Without Chavis last year, LSU couldve taken a big step backwards.
Miles continues to say Chavis is one of the most talented coaches, he's ever been around.

find me a DC that has a top 20 defense year after year that does it without talent. Wonder what his thoughts are regarding Kirby Smart

i hate when people (including idiots here) use this line of reasoning. its like they think these 18 year old kids can just walk on the field saturday and win games in the SEC with no coaching, practice, scheming, or film study
