The need some of you have to constantly qualify Les miles on this board never ceases to amaze me.
Guy has been here 10 years.
We have what we have in our football coach.

I kind of agree with this. I find the "pro-Miles" threads equally as obnoxious as the "anti-Miles" threads.

Les' record combined with his personality, entertainment value, type of guy he is... CLFM and it's not even close.

One of the top DB's in the state for 2016 just committed to the far less superior coach over at Alabama.

Two completely different situations they walked into at LSU no?

If not for Saban, Miles would have probably never taken the job. Saban made LSU attractive again.
Miles was having success at Ok St.

if saban stays, we have at least 2 more nc's. and, it's hard to debate it.

so your new angle is hypotheticals.....seems reasonable

The two are too closely intertwined to do anything but imo. Saban left the program in tremendous shape for whoever followed him. Take away the hypotheticals and go strictly by the facts then its clearly Saban. He's the one that resurrected the program, the one that brought LSU it's first natty in 40+ years.

My point is that currently it's Saban, but LM is right there with him and certainly could overtake him for this distinction.

Bob, you missed the point which is no surprise.
Your question:

"Really simple. If Miles replaces Dinardo, does he still compile that record he currently has?"

Since Miles didn't replace DiNardo. (You do know this, right?)Why ask the question? But since this is the line you started; my question to you using the same line of thought, "would Saban have had the same success if he had replaced Hallman?".
It seems like a fair question to me, and I'm sorry that you couldn't follow.

Looking at the why is the only way to look at this situation logically.

No, it isn't. It's an entirely different question. It would read something like this...

"Which LSU coach would have performed better at LSU if they had had to build a program following a bad run?"

Sure, that scenario is hypothetical in its entirety, but at least it's honest. The other way we have one coach that gets to be graded on a curve based on the assumption that he did a better job because of what he walked into, and another coach that gets slammed because he had an easier first day. In essence, both of those views are biased views rather than honest assessments of their time at LSU.

Either compare them as is, without any caveats or don't bother asking the question.

As is, the records and overall success WHILE AT LSU speak for themselves.

Imagine if Saban had stayed another 5 years at LSU for arguement's sake. How many titles would LSU have likely won? 2-3 imo....as opposed to LM's 1 in 2007.

Which ones, and why?

After 2003, LSU took a solid step back in 2004. We got prison raped in Athens...we've yet to have a loss that bad (and don't even suggest the rematch with BAMA) under Miles in a marquee game. While Miles gets ripped for so many players leaving early, Saban was lauded for having Clayton, Mauck and Hill declare early. You think we'd have been better off in 2004 with those three back?

Would they have won in 2005? Is anyone under the impression Saban would have been the better coach to lead LSU's program through Katrina and Rita? A guy wound up tighter than a drum in a situation where for very long stretches things were nearly uncontrollable?

What about 2006? You think we call a different offensive game in Auburn in a defensive struggle with the same OC Saban had? Does Saban's "presence" get the officials to NOT pick up the PI flag? Does Saban being there prevent a bad center/QB exchange on the goal line at UF and a subsequent turnover on the opening kick off?

How do we know he still wins in 2007? After all, we need Perriloux on the team to win in the SECCG, and he was not coming when Saban was still here. Or is the assumption Saban would not have lost to Arky (yeah, right) or UK (miracles to win anyone?)

I could do this for the entire run, and it would be as likely to have happened as anything postulated. Because I, like everyone else, would simply be guessing.

I love what if's...I do. But anytime someone says that something would have likely happened if as if coming from a place of authority, they are talking squarely out of their arse.

Ok here goes. Sure they did they lost the sr. QB and many other players. Plus no matter what anyone else says the NFL was already in the Works for Saban even before the Season.

Not sure about this. Miles handled this very well.

What about 2006?

IMO LSU wins going away in 2006. that team[coached right] would have been as good as 2003.

Very well could have. A perfect QB for Saban's system and would not have CHOKED away the UK game and the Arky game that year. Charles scott was having a monster game against UK and Miles sat him. Saban would have wore down UK in the second half with that horse.

Look at the 2003 game against Arky. A total beatdown 55-24. One of the most dominant performances In my life at TS.

I could do this for the entire run,

Then why don't you. I noticed you didn't talk about how Saban brought a team off a 3-9 season to an 8-4 season in 2000. And then Had the hottest team in the country at the end of the year in 2001. You think Miles could have done that?

This is just my opinion. I love Miles a lot he is a great coach. But I am not a LSU homer and look at what both coaches have done.

Well said musicman...

Obviously, nobody knows for sure what would have happened if Saban stayed another 5 years at LSU, but given his results at Bama, there is absolutely no reason to believe he would not have kept winning titles at LSU as well.

I threw out 2 or 3 more natty's and still believe that isn't out of line all things considered.

That may be, but Saban has benefitted from some questionable BCS/Media shenanigans (7 BCS Human poll voters putting Okla State FIFTH OR SIXTH after they destroyed OU in '11 Big 12 Title game),
thus paving the way for the mulligan rematch.

And also some outrageous luck (2012 LSU game).

LSU could very easily have had the national titles that Bama was handed in 2011 and 2012.

Where would Saban's name be then ????
But he hasn't and we are dealing with what is.... Nick evolved from his time with the Dolphins and is a better coach for it. However, at LSU, Les Miles has been the best coach we've ever had despite the circumstances .

Miles is the most successful football coach in LSU history no matter who came before him. Anyone denying that fact is clueless.

Les Miles at LSU is one of the 25 best tenures of a coach at a single school in the history of the sport, and I defy any Miles-hater to produce a list of 25 tenures that are better.

Alabama's margin over Oklahoma State was wide enough to render these votes relevant. If those seven voters had voted Oklahoma State #2, Alabama still would have gotten in.
