I would say Les is already the best LSU coach, but give him another national title and that pretty much ends the debate. Hope it happens soon!

But how good does Miles do if Saban had not built the program to where it was when Les got here.

There's no way to know that, but I know Miles at LSU smokes Saban at LSU in just about every measurable category--including the best season in school history (long after all of Saban's coaches and players were gone).

the best that we've ever had was saban. anyone who denies that is simply retarded. that's for sure.

If you're talking about overall career, sure. But only considering their time at LSU, give me Les.

The need some of you have to constantly qualify Les miles on this board never ceases to amaze me.
Guy has been here 10 years.
We have what we have in our football coach.

Just say what's on your mind and be done with it. You're one of those who was calling for Les' head in 2005.

Well he has been here longer. Imo 2003 was a better year than 2011. Hey 13-1 with a NC is better than 13-1 without a NC. I am a Saban fan just of what he was able to do while here. He is the enemy now. As far as best ever. I will reserve my judgement until after Les wins another NC, which in 2015 looks very promising.

I'll just say that I will take our current entire coaching staff over any staff LSU has had in the past.

Les has assembled quite a "team" of coaches for our boys.

And I'm happy with what we have. It's led to some good times, and we're setting up well for a nice run.

Two completely different situations they walked into at LSU no?

Sure...but no where in the OP did anyone suggest we needed to grade on a curve.

Based on what they did while at LSU, Les is clearly superior. WHY may be open for debate, but Nick only lost less than three games one time.

It's not even debatable. Les has been better while at LSU then Nick was while at LSU.

Anything else is either attempting to rewrite history based on current success at another program, or attempting to crystal ball a potential LSU career that never took place had he stayed based on the success he's had at another program. Both are wildly unfair to his successor (something that has dogged Miles since day one) and unnecessarily kind to Saban

On an emotional level as a fan, it's no contest. Look at that 2011 resume, though. That team arguably had the most impressive record in modern CFB history--even including the loss in the mulligan game. And it bears saying that we beat every single team we played. Can't say that for 2003.

Neither Saban or Miles replaced Hallman, so as usual, you make no sense.

This is a toughie and I'm going to try a new angle here to support my view that Saban remains the best LSU has had....thusfar.

Imagine if Saban had stayed another 5 years at LSU for arguement's sake. How many titles would LSU have likely won? 2-3 imo....as opposed to LM's 1 in 2007.

But this battle isn't over yet, not by a long shot. LM has shown a capacity for change the last few years which has resulted in a resurgence instead of what many predicted to be a downslope in the program. LM is doing more delegating out to highly qualified assistants and taken on the role of LSU's 'GM' where he is the head recruiter and face of the program, a role he's perfectly suited for.

LM is 1b to Saban as of right now imo, but this battle has yet to be definitively decided. We'll see...

Les Miles, how great is he... The Best LSU has ever had.

Saban is a better coach now than when he was coaching at LSU. He is considered the best in the business, but if we are just talking LSU tenure give me Les, Saban, Dietzel

That may be, but Saban has benefitted from some questionable BCS/Media shenanigans (7 BCS Human poll voters putting Okla State FIFTH OR SIXTH after they destroyed OU in '11 Big 12 Title game),
thus paving the way for the mulligan rematch.

And also some outrageous luck (2012 LSU game).

LSU could very easily have had the national titles that Bama was handed in 2011 and 2012.

Where would Saban's name be then ????

Looking at the why is the only way to look at this situation logically. One replaced a coach who was fired. One replaced a coach that left because he received total control of an NFL franchise. Which situation do you think was better to walk into?

I'm not going to change anybody's mind, just like my opinion isn't changing. It doesn't matter.

But hypotheticals are better, I love dwelling over what could be or could have been. I close my eyes to wash away the memory of the stains on the panelling in my trailer and I'm suddenly drinking a pina colada on a nude beach with a hot busty blonde.
