Going to DC to sight see. What area do I need to stay and do I need to rent a car? I've never been and I'd like to see all of the history there. Thanks.

Look for an Extended Stay American because you're going to be there about a month.

You'll be here awhile then. If you want to see the all the classic DC stuff like the Mall, Arlington Cemetery, Iwo Jima, etc. then you don't need a car. But you'll be missing some other good stuff like the National Cathedral, the Zoo, Udvar-Hazy, the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, etc. Plus the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial is kinda neat although you literally have to hike through the woods to see it.

But you can spend a week just seeing the usual stuff. I recommend picking up a 7 day Capitol Bikeshare pass as well, it'll save you on the walking.

Be advised that the best food isn't really that close to the Mall for some reason. The local food trucks are often quite good though.

I've been there three times all around a week long and still haven't done everything. You need at least a full week to hit the major highlights. Staying by the national mall is cool.

If you are going with your SO I recommend going on an Odyssey dinner cruise. I just went on one in Chicago and it was incredible. The DC cruise is on their newest ship. It takes you on to all the different sites you can see from the water. Great food, dj and acoustic performers, and complimentary champagne

Arlington, Mall and if they take the fence down at the Whitehouse you may be able to just walk in like any illegal does.

I was in DC last summer, and some of the highlights were:

Mt. Vernon
Alexandria Ghost Tour
Arlington Cemetery
WW II Memorial
FDR Memorial
Lincoln Memorial
Library of Congress
Smithsonian Natural History Museum
Day trip to Gettysburg
National Shrine (at Catholic University--a must-see if you are Catholic but worth it even if you aren't)

Get a Smart card for the metro/bus. If you stay near a stop you will probably not have to drive or even use Uber that much.

Go see:

Newseum
Natural History Museum
Washington Mon. (it's open)
Spy Museum

Take Uber and the metro everywhere.

Tabard Inn is a good spot. It has a great restaurant.

You didn't say if you have family coming or if you are going solo, so it may or may not be a good fit, budgets unconsidered.

Good luck with that. I've been here since 1973 and there is an awful lot that I have yet to see.

There are some very good suggestions in this thread. Enjoy your trip. It's a beautiful city.

We went to DC a couple of years ago and stayed at an Embassy Suites that was around the corner from a metro station and everything you want to see.

Ate some great meals there as well , Jaleo, Cuba Libre, and the other Jose' Andres restaurant that I forgot the name of.

If you get a rental car, watch out for speed cameras. I got tickets in the mail a month after getting back.
