Maybe it's already been discussed but I messed it.

Kurdish forces seized two oilfields in northern Iraq and took over operations from a state-run oil company on Friday, while Kurdish politicians formally suspended their participation in Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government.

In protest against the accusation, the Kurdish political bloc announced they were suspending participation in the Baghdad government on Friday. Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari said the Kurds would continue to attend parliament. Zebari, who is a Kurd, said Iraq risked falling apart if a new inclusive government is not formed soon as "the country is now divided literally into three states - "Kurdish, a black state (ISIL) and Baghdad".

Kurds have been waiting for this for a long time. There are so many angles at play who knows if it will work out. I think Iran may step in because they don't want an independent Kurdistan. I think turkey will stay neutral.

This crap is so confusing.
Are the Kurds fighting Israel as well, or it that Hamas? Help. I just can't keep up with all of this.
And they say that Iraq will fall apart if a new government isn't formed, yet they now have 3 groups fighting?
And this basically means that gas prices are about to skyrocket, no?

All that I know is everybody is crossing everybody's borders, including ours.
I always thought the Kurds were good, no?

Is this in Kirkuk?
Every Kurd I talk to says now is their time for independence. Only one says it's all for political show, but they are actually starting to roll out Kurdish money designs

The Israelis are the only ones who would buy the Kurdish oil they shipped to Turkey via pipeline without the central governments approval

Kurds are just taking advantage of the situation to get what they've always wanted: an independent Kurdistan. Honestly the best way to settle the ME is to terminate these made up states and let the various groups sort themselves.

Honestly, over here, the central government has done pretty good on price control. The cost never went up or down after the Baji Refinery fell. However, now all the gas in the country is coming via truck from Turkey so the gas line are freaking nuts. Some companies (like mine) have contracts to pay 3x the government price and not wait in line.

Was hoping you'd chime in. What's your take on the situation now. American media is all Hobby Lobby/ Southern Border right now so we really have to search for Iraq news.

Al-Jazeera probably covers it pretty well.

No. Kurdish Iraq has been semi-autonomous even back to Hussein's days, and by the standards of that part of the world run things fairly well. It's a wonder why they haven't done something like this a long time ago.

quote:Doubtful. Those fields mostly produce fuel internally for Iraq. The Maliki govt has been withholding refined gasoline from the Kurds for years. The wanted the oil fields in order to supply themselves with fuel.

It's pretty calm honestly. All the fighting has really migrated to the areas around Baghdad. I know the expats in Basra have been evacuated (oil companies), but Kurdistan operations are going fairly normal.
The Kurdish PM has announced an independence referendum in the coming months, but no date has been set. Most of the Kurds are excited about this, but a few think it's purely BS
ISIS and the Kurds are only fighting in the previously disputed areas (such as Kirkuk), but on the previous borders it's been calm as rain as far as I have heard.
Iraq still can't get enough of parliament together to make quarm to elect a new PM as most everyone hates Maliki. The central government has also shutoff twitter, facebook, youtube etc. in the south. Still on in Kurdistan.
It's really turning into a Sunni vs. Shia type deal in Baghdad as well. A lot of the "bad" things the Maliki forces are being overlooked and the few good things ISIS is doing is also being overlooked.

Yes, the Kurds are the people Saddam Hussein used the chemical weapons on, the last time they rose up.

In other news, the Free Syrian Army has taken territory from Assad in the southwest and ISIL in the northwest.
Looks like Assad's forces are starting to wear down.

Exactly - So many borders are defined by colonial occupation.
